Hi,

I would like to build a Federal division for the Western campaigns that fought from Corinth to Chattanooga. Which one should I choose? What books do you suggest?

Cheers,

KC

Brad Butkovich has two extremely well researched scenario books covering the Chickamauga-Tullahoma campaigns "river of Death" and one that covers the March to Atlanta "The Road to Atlanta"…. OMM has these in soft back or PDF…. Hihly recommended…

they not only have the OOBs of each army (at least in the first book RoD), but also have a nice blurb about the battles and good modern day photo's of interesting places for each fight.

Madcam.

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like a good starting point.

Peter Cozzens has an excellent series

The Darkest Days of the War: Iuka and Corinth
No Better Place to Die: Stones River
The Terrible Sound: Chickamauga
The Shipwreck of their Hopes: Chattanooga.

If you want a Division, take one from Corp commanded by Thomas.

If I had to pick one division, it would be Sheridan's division. Part of it fought at Peters's Hill at Perryville. The division won fame at Stone's River. They didn't do as well at Chickamauga, but they started out in a bad position. The Sheridan-Hindman scenario in my book is actually a fun one to play. And of course, Sheridan's new consolidated division stormed Missionary Ridge and pursued the Rebels farther down the other side than anybody else.

My second choice would be Palmer's division. Many of the units were veterans of Shiloh. Hazen's men held the Round Forest at Stone's River, and Grose helped throw back Breckinridge's attack. The division fought admirably at Chickamauga, especially Hazen again.

Thanks! Were there any particular uniforms in these divisions or can I use the average Western Campaigns miniatures?

Yeah, unfortunately from a miniature standpoint they were just plain vanilla uniform-wise. Sack coats and forage caps/hats. Being western troops, I would paint them 75% hats, 25% forage caps.

Found this Fort Leavenworth paper: "Major General Philip H. Sheridan and The Employment of His Division During the Battle of Chickamauga": link

Yes, its a good paper, with solid background and history of the regiments in the division. I would also read David Powell's two books on Chickamauga. He has some more insight into Sheridan's activities and outlook on the night of the 19th/20th.
