"When Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster briefs, it's like Gen. Patton giving a TED talk — a domineering physical presence with bristling intellectual intensity. These days, the charismatic director of the Army's Capabilities Integration Center is knee-deep in a project called The Russia New Generation Warfare study, an analysis of how Russia is re-inventing land warfare in the mud of Eastern Ukraine. Speaking recently at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., McMaster said that the two-year-old conflict had revealed that the Russians have superior artillery firepower, better combat vehicles, and have learned sophisticated use of UAVs for tactical effect. Should U.S. forces find themselves in a land war with Russia, he said, they would be in for a rude, cold awakening. "We spend a long time talking about winning long-range missile duels," said McMaster. But long-range missiles only get you through the front door. The question then becomes what will you do when you get there…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

All militaries worth their paycheck plan for many/all contingencies. And a US/NATO conventional battle using modern combined arms mobile warfare tactics. In battle with the Russians. Certainly is one of those contingencies. The Russians won't be Saddam's low grade soldiers that the US/Coalition bounced … twice. Both in a very short time. |

Wow, to announce that Russia depends on massive artillery followed by armor exploitation… I am just shocked by this revelation! They really reinvented land warfare! Somebody sure is earning their pay… |

An interesting article. Personally I have always had a dread of Soviet/Russian artillery. Now that my son is in USMC artillery I dread it even more. |

Seems like the Germans are a bit more serious, with the upcoming testing of their new 130mm cannon. |

If they have the funds to pay for those 130mm guns and the ammunition. I have not heard of any other NATO country switching to the bigger round so that means Germany is on the hook for stocking the round. |

US just introduced 5th generation, segmented DU round early this year. Penetrator dart is now 31" vs original 21" penetrator and designed to defeat new Russian (T-14) composites + Relikt radar reactive countermeasures. Possibly no need to consider 130mm gun until next generation MBTs. US would need to upgrade over 8,000 Abrams compared to Germany with only 250 Leopard 2s in service currently. |

I agree the 120 with upgraded ammo is fine for now for the M1. But yes it's cheaper and easier to upgrade 250 MBTs vs. 8000 MBTs. And even at that, the Germans may have a hard time doing those upgrades. Along with all their own "expenses" they have … 10s of 1000s of refugees now to feed, shelter, etc. Many of which who don't provide anything in return … There is only so much pie to go around. Guns or butter or now hummus I guess … |
