Since the Brexit passed last night, the value of the pound has plummeted. At this time Google says the exchange rate is £1.38 GBP per $1.00 USD.

So, that leads to the big question: place those big miniatures orders from the UK now, or wait and hope the pound sinks further?

So hard to know…

It won't sink and will start to rise again after the weekend.

It won't sink and will start to rise again after the weekend.

The stupid panic will subside by then.

People have already started ordering….

When I first looked it was $1.37 USD per GBP and alittle later it was $1. USD 38 per GBP so I immediately went and placed a large order. I figured if I waited it would cost me more. So my take on it is don't delay and place the order today.

I suspect in the long term it will sink lower again, but the immediate future is more likely a modest recovery – markets usually over-react and then correct after shock news.

Dynaman878924 Jun 2016 9:13 a.m. PST

I've given up trying to anticipate markets, far too much human stupidity and herd mentality – take the latest based on Brexit, do people really expect THAT much change in world markets based on it?

Rich Bliss24 Jun 2016 9:19 a.m. PST

What, you need another reason to buy figures? Just press the 'order complete' button already.

I am sure you will not receive nearly that good of an exchange rate from your credit card provider……..they usually trail when rates drop from my experience….

ataulfo24 Jun 2016 11:00 a.m. PST

Agree with Olicana.

Weasel24 Jun 2016 11:03 a.m. PST

Imagine it'll bounce back up as things stabilize but will settle lower than before.

If you're in the US though, good time to order some PP or QRF though.

14Bore24 Jun 2016 11:34 a.m. PST

So your saying buy British figures now?

Mute Bystander24 Jun 2016 11:47 a.m. PST

But…. the handful of figures I need to complete all my armies are from USA sources!

This must be some former life karma at work!

Must research UK manufacturers tonight. Maybe there is something…

Seriously sorry about the market thing. Not unexpected and hopefully a quick recovery for your sake.

There will be a lot of economic "expertise" on the site for the next few days. It might be wise to wait for things to settle in case you stir up sensibilities? Give it 2 months?
Sorry there is me being an expert…whoops!

I ordered today from Dom. These things tend to result in a fast over correction followed by a slow slide back to normalcy.

Crazyivanov24 Jun 2016 1:12 p.m. PST

Wow, not only did Britain vote to save itself from the Continent while I was out, they also voted to give me a discount on Mantic until the currency guys stop panicking.

Great job Tories.

Rule Britannia, Britannia rule the waves. . .

Timmo uk24 Jun 2016 1:27 p.m. PST

The Tories were split in their views and voting.

Black Cavalier24 Jun 2016 1:41 p.m. PST

I know there seems to be a rush to take advantage of the drop in the Pound & Euro, but the drop against the Dollar is only about 10%. Maybe I a bit cheap, but I wouldn't be motivated to buy something even in the US for just a 10% discount.

arngrimson24 Jun 2016 1:56 p.m. PST

To me the £:$ looks about the same as it was a month or so back; it goes up it goes down.

vtsaogames24 Jun 2016 2:12 p.m. PST

The stupid panic will subside by then.

From your lips… since my retirement account on this side of the pond is tanking with sympathy panic.

I won't buy figures because my house is already full. Happens when you get old.

Norman D Landings25 Jun 2016 6:52 a.m. PST

I doubt anybody's actually doing much ordering, because everybody seems to be on the various TMP boards asking if its time to order from the UK.

GeoffQRF25 Jun 2016 9:43 a.m. PST

We saw a lot of orders from the USA too

Inkpaduta25 Jun 2016 10:56 a.m. PST

I think if people had been thinking about ordering or had been planning to order then they moved quick and took advantage of the exchange rate. If you hadn't been planning something this probably didn't sway you to jump on board.
Now, if the pound was equal to the dollar…Then I would have to buy something!

The exchange rate has been holding steady; today it's listed at $1.37 USD to £1.00 GBP. No telling what will happen in the coming days, weeks or months. (Notice I got the currency symbols in the right order this time.)

I took a second look at some purchases from the UK that had previously foundered on my budget, and the cost difference wasn't significant enough to re-float them. I guess I really needed the Brexit vote to wait until I'm more caught up on my painting projects. Maybe if the re-Brentry to the EU happens in a year or three, I'll be ready…

Just remember the rates you see are for lots of 1,000,000 or more – not figures, dollars or pounds as the case may be. CC companies don't trail, they charge the rate for smaller lots of trade – I don't think they could legally 'trail' the rate. (no expert here, though)

And, yes, I might place an order soon to take advantage of the rates but they've been pretty good for a while now, just a bit better right now.

I bought some Red Army tanks from a UK store. I wanted to hop on the bandwagon of hastily-considered, self-indulgent gifts to Russia.

Nope, not stable: down to USD 1.317 to £1.00 GBP on Monday lunchtime, UK time. As currency exchanges close at the weekend, the rate held steady only until the Asian markets opened on Monday (their timezone).

As the price of casting metal is based on the US dollar rate, UK wargames business will find the cost of their raw material will jump, and some will feel pressured to put up prices.

kallman29 Jun 2016 9:54 a.m. PST

As of today pound has steadily risen to 1.349 and currently is going slightly down at the moment. So it looks like a roller coaster for now but not heading for the crash dive that so many are predicting. Yes there are some talking heads saying that the pound could hit parity with the dollar by the end of the year. Much can happen between now and then. In the great scheme of things this is a hiccup and things will readjust and seek their level in good time.

Sadly on a day to day basis this is having a stressful impact on lives and we should all show a little empathy and respect.

Two Bryans gets it right in that a continually declining pound will force miniature manufacturers to raise prices in order to make up the loss due to their increased cost for materials. Which will most likely wipe out any perceived gains from overseas buyers in the States. Be careful for what you wish for is all I am saying.
