Would anyone on the Eurasian continent wear any kind of neck armor in the 8th or 9th centuries or was that a later invention? If they had it do we have any idea what it looked like?

Yes. I always thought that was a later Medieval thing.

From the Tarim Basin: Armour on the Stele of l'ui-zcika, cave at Qyzil, about 700 AD: 'The armour consists of a harness with enormous high curved collar. There appear to be mail coifs in the Chludov Psalter, Moscow, Historical Museum MS 129, Byzantine, 9th century Druzhina 9th Century Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers
