I've got a new post on my blog with some painting tips that have helped me improve a bit. Not tips for amazing painters to get award winner results, which I will never be able to aspire to. But just stuff that has helped me make good progress while getting decent results. Have a look if you're interested, and feel free to leave comments with feedback or your own painting tips.

Excellent tips. Especially one near and dear to my heart: 'figures painted with a basic paint job are better than unpainted plastic or metal'.

I bought an Ott light from Michael's using one of their 40% off coupons. Coupled with an incandescent light it gives me great lighting focused right over my painting area.

Look at the figure at arms length, aka the 3 foot rule. Make sure you are spending you time on the right details, not all of them. Single figures are great for Characters, but for armies develop an assembly line.

Better basing makes better figures. Good basing and decent flags make simple but neatly painted units look good.

Those are some fantastic tips! Just what one needs when the motivation is lacking. thanks again!

Great ideas! I do some of them already, and I'm going to try the new ones!

Oh no, no you have made those of us who are underperforming feel bad.

Perhaps I can use that hurt feelings to inspire me to pick up the brushes again. I really need to if life would just not keep getting in the way.

"Keep reminding yourself that perfect is the enemy of good."

I should have that engraved on my painting table.

Good read

Thanks. I agree entirely. I would add that if you can arrange a permanent space for painting, that will help you a lot. That may mean buying a bigger house.

Thank you for the comments, everyone. I'm glad you enjoyed the post, and hope the tips, or your own take on them, help you out.

Good tips, I do many of the same.
One thing just started had to paint crosses on 15mm hats, used a straight pin. Worked well.

Really great advice. Wish I had known most of them when I started instead of painfully figuring them out.
