I paid to see U-571 at the cinema. Gave *them* money to lose that two hours of my life….

Bellbottom17 Jun 2016 4:07 p.m. PST

Agree with both the above

Wasn't that the one with the Nazi Riverdance?

Though I agree its a terrible film.

A lot of movies back then were questionable at best (well, today too) but at least BotB was entertaining.

Co-incidentally I was at home one afternoon and saw Battleground … a film of which I had previously been unaware.

I thought it was pretty good: a much better Bulge film than the Kojak one wink

Worst WWII film? Actually I found Pearl Harbour unwatchable … sooo much character padding …

Battleground is a classic, but I kinda have a soft spot in my heart for Battle of the Bulge.

Really, if you look at it from a different angle…lying down and squinting…it gets the essence right.

tberry740317 Jun 2016 6:29 p.m. PST

While I agree with most of the movies cited, 1941 doesn't belong since it was never intended to be a "serious" war movie.

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP17 Jun 2016 7:08 p.m. PST

Sorry, Battle of the Bulge isn't even close. Oh, yes, it's a mess of a movie, but it's a thoroughly entertaining mess. No, it's not historically accurate (wrong tanks is the least of it's problems.) It is decently acted, and a fun watch, as long as you know it doesn't come within a country mile of being accurate. I've seen far worse dreck disguised as a world war two movie. Most of the straight to DVD junk of the last ten years or so comes to mind.

It's my favorite bad war movie.

marcus arilius17 Jun 2016 9:48 p.m. PST

Pearl Harbor, Fury, Midway, Red Tails, and Memphis Belle.

Martin Rapier17 Jun 2016 11:10 p.m. PST

Battle of the Bulge was a great film ad it spawned so many memorable moments. How many times have wished for Telly Savalas in his turretless Chafee in our games?

For complete and utter dreck of no cinematic merit whatsoever, try Breakout, the follow up to Cross of Iron. Despite its all star cast it really is the worst war film ever made (and one of the worst films overall).

Many of the films listed above at least have some cinematic merit in terms of plot, composition, engage, characters Tec.

How can anyone diss Memphis Belle? It brings a tear to me eye every time.

Bunkermeister17 Jun 2016 11:31 p.m. PST

Battle of the Bulge is an exciting war movie. It's great to see the terrain, and all the tanks. The color and sets are wonderful. It gets the over all idea across, but all the details wrong.

Midway was a terrible movie, and most of the almost good parts were just lifted from Tora! Tora! Tora!.

I think Battle of the Bulge is like Braveheart or Patriot. The less you know or care about the actual history, the more you can like the movie.

The botb movie is an absolute disgrace to the vets that fought there, hence my ranking of worst war movie of all time.

It's terrible, the storyline compared to actual events is the worst plot ever hands down.

I watched it in grade 8 and knew the history and thought what a bunch of crap.

Tacitus18 Jun 2016 12:08 a.m. PST

Bunkermeister has the gist of it. I think I would enjoy the movie just as much, if not more, if it was sci-fi. And Memphis Belle is great!

The SS tankers singing "Panzer Lied " is worth the price of admission. And the premise , a New York city police detective (Henry Fonda) cracks the German battle plan. Haha haha!

Totally entertaining .

Nothing wrong with that! I watch "The Black Hole" from Disney a few times a year and it is also a bad movie.

My vote: Where Eagles Dare, which I call Where Turkeys Dare.

But yeah, that Bulge movie is pretty bad.

My gran once told me she could never forgive the Japanese for Pearl Harbour. I had to tell her that Americans made that movie….

Jeigheff18 Jun 2016 2:50 p.m. PST

Terrement, I am not proud to say that I saw "Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS" on VHS many years ago. It's the kind of movie that puts images in your head that you don't want there, but can't get out. It's a very cruel movie, and I don't want to see it again. Thanks for adding your disclaimers.

inverugie18 Jun 2016 2:51 p.m. PST

Dom, couldn't agree more regarding your (gran's) take on 'Pearl Harbor'.

Those who rubbish BofB obviously don't appreciate:
a. the task of putting together so many 1940s aircraft (despite the inaccuracy of the Spanish Bf109s and He111s),
b. keeping history (even recent) entertaining, and
c. Susannah York ('nuf said).

Cavcrazy,

To cite '1941' you apparently have no sense of irony, or humour.

CCollins18 Jun 2016 7:21 p.m. PST

"The Red rose of Normandy" is absolute tripe despite having some very nice kit in it.

Theres some godawful thing with Vinny Jones in that makes my blood boil,

and theres that truly dire "The Biggest Battle" a 60s spagetti war-film that makes The Battle of the Bulge look like Art

My inner 6 year old still has a softspot for tBotB, theres lots of cool war-ry stuff going on! But yes you can see why many veterans were horrified by it.

I think its best I don't re-watch it, its nice to keep some illusions from my youth.

Mark 118 Jun 2016 10:58 p.m. PST

My oldest brother took me to see The Battle of the Bulge at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood when I was 6 years old. I still remember it. The scene where Bronson's unit's bazooka round bounces off of the Tiger turret, and so they fire at the tracks and then toss a grenade into the hatch of the disabled tank. Wow.

They had a tank in the parking lot in front of the theater. Wow.

I was awe-struck. Yes, I know it was not very accurate, but … it was WOW!

It started a fascination with tanks that I carry with me to this day! If it weren't for the Battle of the Bulge, I would probably be on some web forum talking about dinosaurs or whales or who knows what else. For me, the Battle of the Bulge is 0:00 on my hobby clock.

@ Inverugie
I don't think anyone mentioned Battle of Britain, but I agree about Susannah York (wholeheartedly!)

GGouveia19 Jun 2016 7:59 a.m. PST

Actually I refuse to watch u-571 due to its nonhistoric storyline. I think I watched 20 minutes and switched to something else. Yes it was awful.

GGouveia19 Jun 2016 8:02 a.m. PST

No way Battle of Britain was a fantastic movie. Battle of the Bulge is bunk and yes I agree u-571 is trash.

Norman D Landings19 Jun 2016 12:13 p.m. PST

BotB is utterly worthless as history, but there's something enjoyable about seeing large numbers of actual, real armoured vehicles onscreen.

No matter that they're the 'wrong' tanks… they are at least the real thing, weighty metal, clattering tracks and roaring engines, and make no mistake – we won't see that again.
If they remade BotB tomorrow, they'd have the 'correct' vehicles onscreen – but they'd all be CGI.

Great War Ace19 Jun 2016 8:54 p.m. PST

Real tanks in copious numbers. Bulge is nowhere near being the worst WW2 movie ever made….

GROSSMAN19 Jun 2016 9:04 p.m. PST

How can you not like Fury? I agree regarding 1941 total shite, but not really a war movie.

Pontius20 Jun 2016 5:21 a.m. PST

"Ships With Wings" a film about the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal navy and was partly filmed aboard HMS Ark Royal. This is a dodgy film I've only seen once, and that was long time ago, and have no wish to repeat the expereince.

spontoon20 Jun 2016 5:21 p.m. PST

Ships With Wings was a Pre-war film, so you have to cut it some slack. However there are ssssssoooo many bad WWII films I shan't even attempt to list the worst. The Last Panzers gets an honourable mention. Dis-honourable?

Ships With Wings was a Pre-war film, so you have to cut it some slack.

Ships With Wings was released in 1941 and, I presume, mainly filmed in 40/41.

Marc33594 Supporting Member of TMP22 Jun 2016 11:48 a.m. PST

Actually the poster for Ardennes movie looks like an M-36. Further the trailer features an M-36 though it looks like one of the post war mods like the ones I saw in the Balkans. There is a T-34 operated by the Germans in the clip though and what appears to be a SdKfz 251, both are in gray. There is also a scene, CGI to be sure, showing a massive group of M4s moving into combat.

Still looks like a massive waste of time. Not good enough to watch and not bad enough to be camp.
