I think there is enough coverage of "Hamilton" that most people get the general idea of the show. So do you like the modern Hip-Hop and casting of "Hamilton" or do you prefer the classic "1776".

Winston Smith17 Jun 2016 1:34 p.m. PST

Hamilton is $850 USD per ticket. So I have nothing to compare 1776 to.

If you are having trouble with the Hamilton lyrics, there is a site that has every lyric along with annotations about what they are referencing.

For example here is the song about the New York campaign:

It's American Bollywood.

Winston, that was an insult to Bollywood. – LOL!

rustymusket17 Jun 2016 7:13 p.m. PST

1776 . I have only seen bits of Hamilton on TV but I had a hard time understanding the lines with as fast as they talk/sing.

Buck21517 Jun 2016 7:42 p.m. PST

1776. Benjamin Franklin was great comic relief to John Adams, who is "obnoxious and disliked"…

1776, The dialogue always brings a smile to me.

Thomson: [calling for a vote] Where's Rhode Island?
McNair: Rhode Island's out visiting the necessary.
Hancock: Well, after what Rhode Island has consumed, I can't say I'm surprised. We'll come back to him, Mr. Thompson.
Thomson: Rhode Island passes.
[Roar of laughter from the Congress]

When I saw "1776" on Broadway back in 69/70(?) I doubt the ticket cost more than $15 USD if even THAT (NOT "best" seats…)!!!

'72(?) movie $1.50 USD or so?…

$850 USD for *ONE* "Hamilton" ticket???

Not a chance!!! (Even though I "like" the concept, heard some of the musical in pieces and LIKED what I heard…)… I'll buy the original cast album, get a "buzz" on and "imagine" the staging – unless of course there's a DVD/movie forthcoming!!!

Sorry.

I "work" for a living.

Martin Rapier17 Jun 2016 11:14 p.m. PST

I haven't got a clue about either, but I do in general, like a musical.

If forced to pick just one, it would probably be Oliver, or maybe The Producers.

I liked 1776 (saw the late 90's version) but none of the songs had me tapping my feet.

Since Hamilton is hip hop, none of that is likely to get my feet going. And I won't try to see it until the ticket scalpers move on to the next hit. A guy in our group saw it before it took off. He said the cast was talented and attractive. As for the plot, he said the less you know about Alexander Hamilton, the better.

Among other things, it ignores his less appealing traits, like disdain for most of the population. He liked the elites. He also distrusted democracy, wanted president and senators to serve for life.

Good thing he failed in that.

1776 is a typical, moderately successful, Broadway Musical. Hamilton is a once in a generation work of genius. The reason it's getting $1,000 USD and up a ticket is good old American Capitalism with short supply ( small Broadway theaters) and high demand in a marketplace chock full of 1% -ers. BTW the show has a daily lottery for 100 seats at $10 USD to insure some ordinary people can see the show. A section of seats is also set aside for high schoolers in the local area at no cost.

The author and star Lin Miranda, is leaving the show July 9th, and that final show s being taped. I suspect it will be available a a typical DVD price and will be shown on PBS at some point. Road shows start this Fall and will hit major cities nationwide. All of this will lower demand and take pressure off the ticket prices in NYC. The show will have a long run and so ample opportunities for people to see it in NYC at typical $100 USD prices will be arriving in the next year.

The cast recording is terrific, and the history is very closely tailored to Ron Chernow's award winning biography. It has introduced many young people to the history of the period and an overlooked founding father. It has also created a bridge to that history for ALL Americans.

nochules18 Jun 2016 11:18 a.m. PST

One of the major themes of Hamilton is about historical legacy. How are you going to be remembered? So there are plenty of mentions of Hamilton's less than desirable qualities voiced by Jefferson, Madison and Burr. But it is really up to the audience to decide if they listen to that narrative or the one put forward by Hamilton and his supporters.

At times the musical is quite explicit in stating that there are gaps where you have to make assumptions about what happened. "No one else was in the room where it happened" so you either have to believe Jefferson or Hamilton's biased account of how they reached an agreement. His wife sings "I'm erasing myself from the narrative. Let future historians wonder how Eliza
reacted when you broke her heart" as she burns the letters they wrote to each other.

So I think it does a good job of trying to present a nuanced, if not exactly balanced view of Hamilton, or at least as well as you can do in a couple hours while doing a lot of singing and dancing at the same time. And I am a staunch Jeffersonian…

Grignotage18 Jun 2016 11:59 a.m. PST

I love 1776 and really want to see Hamilton. I like what I have seen/heard of it so far, which surprised me because I don't like rap/hip hop.

But 1776 is a classic. I find myself occasionally humming the obnoxious and disliked song, and saying "for gods sake John, sit down".

Lt Col Pedant18 Jun 2016 1:46 p.m. PST

Both. I'm not with MajorB.

Winston Smith18 Jun 2016 1:58 p.m. PST

I am not passing judgement on Hamilton.
The whole thing just struck me as unreal.
And then I read a whole list of conservative writers and politicians who enthused all over it. Who knows? I will probably like it.

charared18 Jun 2016 4:04 p.m. PST

Repiqueone, thanks for the heads up regarding the cast album and the forthcoming(?) video of Mr. Miranda's performance!

Hadn't heard of these and really want to see "Hamilton"…

Thanks!

thumbs up

Old Contemptibles18 Jun 2016 10:02 p.m. PST

I haven't seen "Hamilton" either but as I said there has been a lot of coverage. I think I have seen most of it on TV. It's a bio of Alexander Hamilton set to rap music. Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton are played by African Americans. This is in stark contrast to "1776." I don't expect hardly anyone here has actually seen "Hamilton" because the tickets are about a $1,000.00 USD each. If you can get one. If you find a ticket for $850.00 USD, buy it and scalp it.

Yeah…I would have preferred a Mischianza!

grtbrt20 Jun 2016 1:32 p.m. PST

If we just are talking about musicals/plays related to the revolution I prefer "A New World " to either of those , But of those 2 I prefer 1776 over Hamilton – But my 2 sons (11 & 14 ) are split my younger prefers 1776 and older Hamilton .
We saw both within a 2 week period in April of this year -so they were fresh in our minds .
Both have their flaws and both have their attractions .

The main difference I see is that 1776 has stood the test of time (almost 50 years ) and I don't see Hamilton doing that, the rap style will most likely lose its allure .

Old Contemptibles20 Jun 2016 2:41 p.m. PST

If you don't mind me asking. How much did you shell out for the Hamilton tickets?

grtbrt20 Jun 2016 7:30 p.m. PST

Don't mind at all. I paid $3,700 USD for the 4 tickets .

COL Scott ret20 Jun 2016 9:55 p.m. PST

1776 I'm a classics kind of guy.

Old Contemptibles20 Jun 2016 11:16 p.m. PST

$3,700 USD, New York abstains, courteously.

grtbrt21 Jun 2016 7:29 a.m. PST

Yes ,it was sort of expensive , BUT my boys will remember it for far longer than a 4 day weekend on the Cape or Florida (which are about the same cost ).
And they both love history ,so….
