What year did the UK begin the black over green current camo pattern? Assuming it coincided with the move by NATO to the 3-tone?

No, it was long before then. There was a previous thread on this if you want to have a search, but essentially the change from dark bronze green to olive drab and black camo happened 1970ish – 15 years or so before NATO three-tone camo appeared.

The recipe is 2/3rds olive drab to 1/3rd black.

I should add that a lot of softskins were simply painted plain olive drab.

Halfords do a spray can of paint suitable for the Nato Olive Green.

Thanks JF! Did not realize it was that early on.

In BAOR only plain OG softskin I saw were at Div HQ and above. In UK saw more but mostly in training units.

Very true.

Having painted everything from a Chieftain down,I am glad it was only two colours :) My tank had at least an inch of paint as added armour.

Remember the corners should be black!

There was no standard scheme, as Bruce says the corners should be black and wheels plain, and squaddies being squaddies now and again some quite interesting schemes appeared!

Tally Ho!

By mistake one of our 432s was painted green on black rather than black on green. Correct pattern but looked wrong. No one (apart from those involved) could say what the problem was.

Another wargaming mate had an all-black Chieftain until the SSM saw it… :)

(They were doing a re-paint, so started by painting all the green bits black…)

For variety in colour think vehicles from BATUS or Warminster are deployed!

So, early 1970s then?

I thought it was more like the mid-late 1970s, so that is useful info.

gunnerphil07 Jun 2016 2:45 a.m. PST

Mako, I joined in 75 and all were black and green by then.
