Does anyone have a good book to recommend that has facing info, etc for the armies of the WSS? Something with photos from the period would be nice…haha!…kidding! But seriously, some good guidance as to color facings and flags would be very nice. Thanks to all! |

The Editions Brokaw series of booklets contain a lot of useful information, including translations from the German Klio Arbeitsguppe studies. They were still being sold by Pat Condray last year, but since his unfortunate death, are in limbo,as far as know. I hope someone will start printing them again,as they were an inexpensive resource,$5-10 each. I see some booksellers offering copies(at inflated prices),but you might find some on line,or at con flea markets. Of course, there are websites with uniform details, also. Warflag.com has a section on WSS fl Check here for uniforms: link Baccus has guides on their site, also. |

The books put out by the Pike and Shot Society are wonderful, but expensive. The Charles Grant and Condray books would have most of what you need. You could try Caliver or On Military Matters for the Condray books. |

Of course, you can try a TMP Search for WSS Uniforms, which will yield some results also. |

This has been asked on TMP before: TMP link TMP link I like the Pat Condray book, WARGAMERS INTRODUCTION TO THE AGE OF MARLBOROUGH myself. |

Depending on the precise Nation you were seeking, some free PDF resources are also available on the Net --such as the booklets I humbly started making covering those of the Nation on whose behalf the war was named --Spanish ones. The first one of these was devoted to the least known of all --the late Austro-Catalan army of Archduke Charles Habsburg, that can be found here: link It does include uniform and flag plates for Infantry, Dragoons, Heavy Horse, Miquelets and irregular units, as well as a short history of most of them and a few flag sheets. Not a pro job, but decent enough IMHO. I also started preparing a new one on Philip d'Anjou's Spanish Infantry that unfortunately got jammed after some personal issues. Hopefully able to re-start it in a future. Lluís |

I have most of the Brokaw boos plus several of Baccus CDs . If you email me on Peter.chadwick@ hotmail.co.uk with what you are looking for, I could probably extract the information for you. For flags I recommend Maverick Models in the UK. Stuart does a good range for WSS. |

Thanks so much for all that good information, guys. I'll start combing through, or reaching out to you, later today. Thank you again! Rob |

Does the Grant book have the Dutch in it? I looked at the free pdfs on the Baccus site (which, coincidentally, is the source of my minis for this period) but I didn't see the Dutch. I'm kind of old school, so would like something tangible to put in my library so I can pull it out when I'm out of wireless range or the kids are on the computer. The Grant book is quite pricey, but if it's got the Dutch in it as well that's a plus. I've got British/Dutch vs Franco-Bavarians. I bought the armies already painted, and many have the flags on them but are not labeled as to which unit it is so I am going to need to match facings to flags in some cases, or just match facings and then provide the flags. Chad47, thank you for the kind offer of taking time to extract the info! All of these offers of assistance are a big part of why I love this hobby of ours! |

I don't have the Grant book,so can't speak to it,but Pat's Wargamer's Introduction booklet mentioned above has information on a number of Dutch regiments, and also Scots,Swiss, and Waloon regiments in Dutch service. Try to find the third edition(1997) if you can. Be aware that these booklets were a labor of love, rather than a money-making effort; there are no color plates, and you have to dig into the text and lists to get all the information you want, but it's well worth the effort. The booklet in question, for instance, also covers France,Britain, and Austria,in fewer than 50 pages, for (originally) $10. USD Enough information to keep you painting for quite a while, even in 6mm(assuming you'll want to add to yours--you will want to add to yours, won't you?) :) Oh,yes,a second booklet covers the Danes,Bavarians, and Prussians;there was one on Hanover, and others on more obscure forces, such as Swabia,Franconia, and Schlessig-Holstein-Gottorp(whew!). Again,A TMP Search for WSS Dutch will bring up a lot of discussions. Lluis, that site sounds great, but I couldn't get the link to work.:( |
