I have enough GW models to make a start on three armies. However I have enough Red Box 1/72 models to make a good start on three armies.

My dilemna is that GW items are very expensive. The 1/72 not-LOTR range is incomplete. So I started thinking about selling off all of the above and going with either 15, 10 or 6mm models.

Then I considered using OG25s to compliment the GW stuff. So before I sell or start buying models I wanted to ask here if others are enjoying a good game in the smaller scales mentioned above.

Would anyone mind sharing pics or links to their LOTR battles in smaller scale?

Anyone tried using Old Glory models to fill out their GW forces or use them for LotR?

I'm not going to be of much help but Pay attention to Battle valor miniature if you haven't already. Plenty of useful minis for your project.

Thanks Nevals I had forgot about those.

We do it in 15mm with a mix of historical and fantasy figures. Sorry but I don't have any pics.

I play LOTR games in 15mm.

Here are some pics of a Battle of Five Armies game:

Wow, Erebor looks amazing!

Yes I the Old Glory Dark Age stuff works quite well. Your older plastic orcs may be a little smaller, but weren't they described as less than men in size in the books?

Always liked this site. link

Awesome website you shared Leadjunky, thanks! I'm not sure how they were described. To my embarrassment I've only ever read "The Hobbit" and the "Children of Hurin."

There are several prior threads about doing it in 10mm.

Never read LOTR?
Drop everything and read it.

I seem to remember an article in the original Courier, back in the early 70s, with a writeup of the Battle of the Five Armies. And another on Helm's Deep.
Somehow they managed without Official GW LOTR figures.

And there were the Heritage range, and Black Tree Design figures some 20 years later.

And Mithril…

BG, the question is "what do you think about gaming in the smaller scales?" There are lots of options if you want to go with non GW 25s (and no one of any consequence would bat an eye that you chose to go with cheaper figures).

Jamesonsafari02 Jun 2016 7:38 p.m. PST

I would prefer Middle Earth gaming WITHOUT GW figures!
Check out Vendel 28mm dwarves etc

I'd recommend Khurasan and Splintered light for 15mm. Between the two you will find everything you need.
Copplestone makes an awesome 10mm line that has a good start, it's missing a few things – like elves.

I use the GW figures that I bought from Europe on the cheap before GW sued everyone and stopped that practice. But Gripping Beast Plastics are perfectly compatible, Wargames Factory Orcs are great for filling the bad guy ranks. SGMMs fantasy range are absolutely terrific for LOTR as well, their dwarves are especially nice. I use Conquest Games Normans for the Rohirrim as well. In 28mm there really are plenty of ranges that work with GWs stuff. I have complete armies for Rohan, Gondor, Harad and Mordor, the Elves as well as Saruman's forces. My smallest force is the Dwarves as I really did not much like the GW ones. I will be using SGMM for these when I get around to it. Here is a link to SGMMs fantasy line.

Another vote for 15mm.

Let me know when you want to get rid of those Dark Alliance 1/72 figures please.

I am moving heavily into it using 1/72 – big enough to see, cheap enough to buy. 40 odd figures for £6.60 GBP – 15p each ish.
