Okay guys, forget the brand and company. If I am looking at buying a fleet box of 8 starship miniatures, do you think $49.00 USD US is a good price. They are new, quality designs, five of the ships are from 1-1.5 inches and the other three are 2-2.5 inches. Obviously designed for 1 inch hex maps. They are pewter, with no flight stands, not painted. I have noticed there is a wide range of pricing and quality and ultimately it just depends on if I like the designs. But I was curious to get some input from others, lets say you liked the designs, do you think that $49.00 USD is a fair price for a fleet box like I described compared to what else is out there right now? Thanks for any input:) |

A fleet pack from Brigade Models is $32. USD That normally gets you a fleet similar to what you describe. The British fleet, for example, gets you 8 ships. The largest are probably at 3" or so, the smallest at 1" or maybe 3/4". These are metal, unpainted, flight stands extra. Meanwhile, the HALO boxed set gets you 49 plastic ships that are much larger – the largest being 5 or 6" I'd guess. It retails for $130 USD? Takeaway – your example sounds very pricey. OTOH it's not like I need 1000 ships, so if I really liked the models, I'd buy them.

For what its worth, my 2/5 of a nickel says the price is probably fair for metal ships. If I were buying I'd figure the price per ship with a "weighted" value for the larger ones. so in this case I'd figure $25 USD for the 5 smaller ($5 ea.) and $24 USD for the 3 larger ($8 ea.) That's cheaper than retail on ADB star fleet battles metal ships, which despite them being more expensive than I'd like and a lower quality than you'd expect, I've bought a ridiculous number of. Bottom line I think they'd be worth it if you like them but not if your on the fence. |

Thanks for the input. Now IMHO the design quality should count a little as well value wise. Or another way I think it should be worth paying, say an extra $5 USD for the box if you really like the designs and they are obviously newer and more detailed, or is that just me? |

Very much so; also, there maybe other things in the mix. I think the Halo set referenced above is the full game one, right? The average ship shouldn't cost as much as it's fairly simple plastic. But there's a LOT more in the box. Other, other hand, Halo caries the weight of the brand, and Microsoft lawyer-protected at that. *woof* That's a lot of added expense. Your example: I'd be hesitant, but not rule them out. I've burned with 'they must be mine' at a higher price point. I'd be hard pressed to get a valuation down even to a give-or-take $5. USD Doug |

Agree with you. The 5 bucks if you really like the design is nothing. That said for the $49 USD price tag, it would still depend on size of the models, and level of detail when compared to another line. My biggest question would be, are the figs made with a particular base in mind, and is there any extra work required to mount onto a base. The two games I collected have had bases included, so I never considered what I would have to do to mount the ships. |
