Excluding the ACW, and with a temporal period of 1816-1913 who is according to you the best 19th century land army commander. This includes wing (for those armies that still used it),Corps, Army, and Army Group commanders. For me I think its Chanzy in the Republican phase of the FPW. KTravlos |

Radetsky in 1848-49. Proof that a good commander can beat the odds despite numbers or troop quality. |

Grrr…youse guise just had to add Bobs and San Martin. Okay, considering he literally had to build his army from scratch and cross the Andes and then defeat all comers… San Martin it is! |

Since I only said excluding the ACW, that means that indeed Colonial Wars are fair game. |

Garibaldi? No formal military training, yet he did an excellent job in many campaigns against austrian, french, prussian and other minor armies in a 35 years long career. |

Since both Napoelonic and ACW are rule out. I'm boned I know little of this period. So I'll Say Davy Crocket! I mean a man that can hit a fly from 400 yards with his rifle. jump the Mississippi and fight a bear hand to hand. Has to be a pretty good commander! |

I don't know about a commander, but he was a mighty fighter and was repulsed by Andrew Jackson's Indian policies, so mark him down for a decent guy. My vote for best land CO is Moltke, though Scott was pretty good in Mexico. |

Scott is on my list. Also San Martín and Bolivar. Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias is certainly one of my favorites. Not too well-known, alas. |

I'll go with Garibaldi as well. If you haven't ever read his bio, do yourself a treat and order a used copy today. They sell for only a penny over the price of shipping. It will knock your socks off ! |
