I'm just about to paint up some dervish cavalry when I realized I'm unsure of what colour to paint their horses. What sort of horses/ponies would the Dervish have had? Also, what colours for their saddles/blankets etc?

That's a good question. There are numerous references to British units being mounted on grey horses, but the how and why always seems to be left out. The artwork I've seen has horses of all colors, it's really r=hard to say. I have large forces for the Sudan in 15mm and have generally painted the horses different colors as there's not much proof that units, especially Dervishes, stuck to one particular color.

I agree. I paint all may cavalry with a variety of horse colors.

I've painted my Dervish horse in different shades also.
I have tended to go for mid-browns and a few dark browns and pie-balds. Grey-whites for Emirs.
