Hello,

I am contemplating my next project in ultra-modern.

The recent engagements present an important number of challenges for both sides:

-asymmetry of forces
-different knowledge of terrain
-different impact of civilian casualties
-different impact of troop casualties
-different level of support of local population

Come in mind the following theaters:
-operations in Afghanistan or Iraq
-Israel vs Hamas, Israel vs Hezbollah
-Syrian gvt + Russian + Hezbollah vs Insurgents
-Russian vs Chechen (Grozny)

What rule would you recommend to simulate this type asymmetrical warfare?

Smallest combat element would be squad or platoon with around 2-3 companies involved for the regular side.

Any suggestion appreciated

thanks

Not Force on Force, but their other one.

Name escapes me currently.

I think they're primarily geared to a reinforced platoon, or less though.

Force on Force but it works best with platoon level…

For genuinely asymmetrical warfare I find an umpire moderated scenario/RPG type approach works best as the operation and motivation of both sides are so different.

Bolt on tactical rules of your choice to resolve contacts.

Force on Force is quite good but I am looking for operations at a higher level.

For genuinely asymmetrical warfare I find an umpire moderated scenario/RPG type approach works best as the operation and motivation of both sides are so different.

Maybe randomizing the appearances of the insurgents with some sort of AI governing their actions (I'm thinking of cooperative game play against the game system)?

e.g: draw card, pilot event or insurgents according to card. Deck could be modified with different distribution of cards according to "intent" of insurgents and mission context for the regular force.
Subsequent actions of insurgents could be diced against a table.

Mako is thinking of Ambush Alley.

I don't know if there's really anything covering this at a level beyond the platoon'ish level.
I'd be very curious too.

Yep, that's them.

Isn't there an Ambush Valley too?

I thought that was a campaign or scenario book, though I could be wrong.

See if you can find the FNG:Operations freebie that was up on the Two Hour Wargames website at one point (or maybe the yahoo group files section). It's Vietnam specific and covered setting up a Fire Support Base and running operations around it (air support missions, building and modifying existing facilities, supply and troop exhaustion), it could provide you a starting point for you.

TFL Charlie Don't Surf could be updated or wait for Fighting Season there new modern set of rules.

Chain of Command is a good ruleset however, I'd rather move one base as a platoon. Fighting Season is more about pushing individual men in a squad.

Good info nevertheless.

I am starting to realize that maybe this type of engagement cannot really be gamed at Battalion level with individual platoons.

stumbled on a very interesting analysis of asymetrical warfare:

"I am starting to realize that maybe this type of engagement cannot really be gamed at Battalion level with individual platoons."

Oh, it certainly can, but depending on the type of opposition you may have to be creative and have some sort of area based movement/control determination.

Even in Afghanistan there were plenty of battalion sized Ops, although in the ground you may only have one company doing a sweep while the others are on cordon duty.

Might be worth looking into lower level gaming with a campaign structure to tie it together.
