I recently acquired some plastic stuff that was used to protect packaged items that look to be perfect for modeling some kind of SF buildings/machines.

What I need are rules and figures for games in a SF setting. What's out there? (So far I've been a historical gamer only, except for a brief fling at fantasy many years ago.)

If you're just get started, take a look at 5 Parsecs from Home on Wargame Vault. Excellent fast playing skirmish rules and you can start with just 1-12 figures.

DUDE, you just opened a can of space worms!

What scale (figure size) are you looking at?
What scale (size of battles, squads, platoons, companies, etc)?
Do you want vehicles on the table?
Do you want hard sci-fi, or sci-fantasy? (extrapolating current technology, or using gravitation guns and tractor beams)
Do you want a few heroes and some red shirt types, or does every soldier matter?

Answer those and we'll trim down the list for you, because there are a LOT of choices out there.

Weasel17 May 2016 9:47 a.m. PST

Let's start with the basics:

How many dudes do you want on hte table and how big dudes do you want them?

Most scifi games are either squad-level skirmishes or platoon level, but there's exceptions.

Hey there Buck-a-roo.

Here is my 2 cosmic coins worth.

Free wargames rules to start with.

As for figures you may wish to start asking around locally for anyone selling them off cheap. There is also E-bay. Just search topics like "lots".

Start small and work your way up to larger games/battles.

With a bit of Google-Fu free paper items to decorate your table with.

Don,
I've got a couple dozen assembled and painted Dreamforge SciFi troops for sale. They will work with any rules. Here is a link to photos, email me if interested and we can talk price.

There is a lot more Sci-fi rules systems and models around today in many scales, than ever before. It seems to me …

I personally agree with JT … I'm a Hammer's Slammer fan.

Classic popular SF minis games in order of longevity:
Ogre
BattleTech (new Alpha Strike for the fast-play big scenarios)
Epic 40K

1) What size do you see those buildings as being? (ie, what size minis do you want to use?)

2) How many figures per side?

If the answers to those two questions are "28mm" and "squad per side", I am going to have to nominate Infinity. Core rules are free to download (and the expansion rules will be in a couple months or less), there's an online army builder, and a very active forum to answer questions.

If the answers to those two questions are "15mm" and "platoon per side", I'd nominate Tomorrow's War or Stargrunt.

Not sure about company per side levels of gaming, that seems to be the black hole of scifi gaming right now.

Dirtside could work for nearly a battalion per side in 6mm.

donlowry18 May 2016 6:39 p.m. PST

What scale (figure size) are you looking at?

less than 28mm, larger than 6mm

What scale (size of battles, squads, platoons, companies, etc)?

yes

Do you want vehicles on the table?

Sure. Why not?

Do you want hard sci-fi, or sci-fantasy? (extrapolating current technology, or using gravitation guns and tractor beams)

Don't care.

Do you want a few heroes and some red shirt types, or does every soldier matter?

None of them matter or I wouldn't risk them.

GZG, Khurasan, Rebel, and other manufacturers produce nice looking figures and vehicles in 15mm/18mm scale.

I don't do figures currently, but do have a range of Ultra-high tech, 15mm, Sci-Fi Grav vehicles – the Topgun Grav Armor range. This includes 12 different vehicles, in two different surface finishes (smooth hulled, and with the Active Armor Defense System, otherwise known by that catchy acronym, AADS).

There are a few new vehicle releases in the pipeline too.

Sadly, currently out of stock on virtually everything, but will be doing a limited restock soon.

E-mail me, if you want a copy of our PDF photo catalog which lists the current models available and prices, or if you want to preorder anything, at:

Low-Hover Grav, and 3-D Grav Flight Bases are now also available for sale with the vehicles, or separately too.

I just remembered that I have an old Buck Rogers game (from TSR), so I have plenty of figures -- about 20-25mm scale. Of course, there are only 2 poses, except for the 6 1-off leader figures.
