"In 1971 we had been in Germany for almost two years, and wargaming a little longer than that. We had a good collection of Airfix and Hinton Hunt Napoleonic figures and a few card buildings. We had discovered German paper buildings, which we could buy from most toy shops. They were very cheap and had two or three different buildings on each sheet.

Until now we had only wargamed together. Most of that time had been spent in Germany and we were not aware of any local wargames clubs…"

I remember my first wargames club…it was a bit poor, to be frank. I was 13 when I joined and the adults didn't enjoy having under 18's filled with questions about how to go about wargaming in their club.

2nd club…a bit poor again. Lots of competition players, didn't like noobs.

3rd club…Just didn't like noobs.

4th club…hit the jackpot.

My first wargaming 'club' is essentially the same one I am in today. Much of that has to do with the people and the fact that Tony (Adams) and his family have been generous enough to have provided the venue since 1969.

I played with some guys I went to high school with, that ended when we all went off to college.

I then fell in with a group of n'eer do wells in college, some of whom I still game with after 40 years.

No nostalgia here. My first war game club experience at age 21 was with a group of absolutely toxic gamers and every game for the two years was an ordeal. A true "state of nature" club, nasty, mean, brutish and short. They were all Napoleonic gamers and utterly awful. Put me off Nappy games for good. Everything with them was a constant argument over the rules where what modifiers troops should or should not get in each moment of the game. After that went through a few other clubs which were pretty good, but most of them evaporated as players moved away. About four years ago I hooked up with another club. However it turned out to be another group of Nappy gamers and it was like the intervening 40 years had vanished.
