All in the title really: what is the most complicated set of rules you play reasonably regularly and enjoy (i.e. not a set of rules you played once and loathed because it was too complicated)?

The point of the question isn't to find out which rules are too complex.

Frostgrave. It is the *only* set of rules I play regularly.

Frostgrave is actually pretty simple. I like simple.

f u u f n f13 May 2016 11:30 p.m. PST

Probably have to say Two Hour Wargames series. Not that they are overly complex, it is just easy to get lost in all the chart rolling. Still loads of fun.

Ney Ney13 May 2016 11:38 p.m. PST

Not that complicated but it is Armati.

Pictors Studio13 May 2016 11:57 p.m. PST

Infinity is the most complicated set of rules I play. When we are using the full rules, with all of the EM weaponry, hacking, guided weapons, TO camo and so on it gets pretty tricksy.

The basic game is more complicated than some others but not too bad over all.

MHoxie14 May 2016 2:19 a.m. PST

Seekrieg V. It plays better than it might seem from looking at the books and data sheets, but there's a lot to keep track of.

I don't play "complicated" rules.

I don't play "complicated" rules.

The most complicated rules might be "Little Wars" or "Charge!" for someone. "Most complicated" doesn't have to mean that it is a complex set of rules in the grand scheme of things, it could be a simple game which is a tiny bit more complicated than the others you play.

ASL – I play this more than any other game, perhaps more than all other games combined.

Chef de bataillon

Epic Armageddon once or twice a week. Not all that complex as such, but getting the "combined arms" of infantry, tanks, mechs, aircraft, and special units to actually combine most effectively can be a challange.

Florida Tory14 May 2016 5:58 a.m. PST

Column, Line and Square. It actually has simple mechanics (think rock, paper, scissors), but gains its complexity from the necessity to master the interactions caused by simultaneous, map-marked movement.

Gave up complex rules. No one I know has time or patience for them anymore.

RavenscraftCybernetics14 May 2016 7:08 a.m. PST

tombstones and tumbleweeds

coryfromMissoula14 May 2016 7:11 a.m. PST

Infinity, though regular play really helps. The problem with it is the complexity comes not from the core rules but the interactions of so many special skills and equipment.

Martin Rapier14 May 2016 7:22 a.m. PST

Like Dentatus, I have largely given up complex rules as no-one I play with has the time and inclination to learn and play them any more.

Probably the most complex commercial set is Spearhead, and I've heavily customised it (mainly to remove the written orders, which my regular players hate).

The rules for Command and Colours are long, but it isn't complicated.

rustymusket14 May 2016 8:40 a.m. PST

I play "thinking about playing solo so I need to decide what rules are best". When I did play, Napoleons Battles, but I want something simple.

Micman Supporting Member of TMP14 May 2016 8:49 a.m. PST

Tomorrows War is the currently the most complex rules set that I play now. In the past it was Star Fleet Battles. Now if you want to talk slow and complex then Harpoon.

Weasel14 May 2016 9:56 a.m. PST

Advanced Squad Leader if board games count.

If not, Face of Battle probably.

GURPS for RPG's.

The Monstrous Jake14 May 2016 1:59 p.m. PST

My most complicated? "Men at Arms" by 3W. I like the Bill Banks Ancients system much better, but MaA does has some interesting twists that make it worth going back to on a regular basis.

Ragbones14 May 2016 4:20 p.m. PST

Hmmm…used to be 'In the Age of Bismarck and Napoleon III,' but I've pretty much stopped playing with what I would now describe as complex rules. I'm retired and just want to relax with good friends while playing with toy soldiers. I want to play the scenario (or game), not the rules.

rtaylor14 May 2016 4:52 p.m. PST

L'Art de la Guerre.

Howler14 May 2016 9:22 p.m. PST

JRIII.

I don't enjoy complicated games but this is the one we play. I move, or not. Roll the # of dice I'm told and do what I'm told as a result. May even say "that don't seem right" just to keep everyone honest. I play with the group but don't really enjoy the rules.

cfielitz15 May 2016 2:15 p.m. PST

Harpoon

ubercommando16 May 2016 5:52 a.m. PST

Advanced Squad Leader. Mind you, I have a few other complicated games in my collection: Third Reich, Air War and Striker.

And….I love it! Simple rules are fine for club games where you need to get players up to speed on the rules fairly quickly but I find I need a challenge every so often. I choose to play ASL not because it is easy, but because it is hard.

No actual complex ones in my regular gaming, most relatively complex in the playlist would be BattleTech Alpha Strike.

christot25 May 2016 4:46 a.m. PST

That I play regularly? probably old school In the Grand Manner Napoleonics…lots of rules, strict sequence, differing dice systems, lots of different tables and factors…sad part is I have a lot of them semi- memorised…

Gennorm25 May 2016 7:15 a.m. PST

Marriage – effin complicated.
