Which companies are currently producing the best fantasy 28mm figures? |
mwindsorfw | 11 May 2016 1:20 p.m. PST |
If you count their stuff as 28mm, Reaper is hard to beat for the sheer scale of offerings. |
kallman | 11 May 2016 1:22 p.m. PST |
I would have to agree that Reaper has this hands down. |

Reaper. Their Bones line is the best value, incredible variety, great quality, easy to paint, easy to modify. The price point of Bones miniatures can't be beat by metal, unless you move to casting your own (legally). Cheers! |

the only people doing 28mm fantasy is Iron Wind Metals |

I agree that Reaper Bones are the best. I just wish they didn't come with huge integral bases. |

Red box games! And the line is starting to mature in a big way, I can see my collection being mostly Tre Manor someday. |
chuck05 | 11 May 2016 3:34 p.m. PST |
Id say either Iron Wind or Otherworld. |
Syr Hobbs Wargames | 11 May 2016 3:37 p.m. PST |
Otherworld one of my top choices, Reaper, and of course Darksword |

Reaper Miniatures Games Workshop Red Box as in not the 1/72 Red Box from the Ukraine. |

Probably the last "large" fantasy figures I receive will be Reaper KS 3 or the latest mice, depending on how expensive replacing the oven is… Reaper, especially Bones material, for this non-painter war gamer! |

There are lots of lines that are great but I think if you want to put a cohesive collection together Otherworld wins. I can't disagree with anything that people said about Reaper but if you wanted to find Ogres that looked like they went together it would be difficult on the Reaper site. Here are 3 I fancy by the same sculptor:
link link link 60 bucks for 3, ouch. Click one time on Otherworld Ogres and you get 5 to pick from. OK, leaving out saggy boobs its 4. 3 of them would be about $52. USD After shipping it would be very similar. Should website presentation be a factor? I guess it does for me. Otherworld is great. Reaper you are going to have to work for it to put a collection together. |

A lot of it is less of which is the best overall, but which makes for something specific. |

I like those 3 Reaper ogres. I think they also offer them in the bones material. At least something close. |

Depends on what you want in Fantasy. Reaper has something good to offer on almost any topic, but depending on the actual niche you look for there may be better options, and a lot of them for some. Dwarfs? Dragons? Undead? High quality casts? Low price? Variety? Customization? |

I always thought Crocodile Games did great sculpts. |

The best 28mm fantasy figures? Why, Games Workshop, with the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit lines. Hands down. If you want to go slightly larger, Mierce Miniatures makes the best models ever sculpted by mankind; but they're about 32mm scale. |
gideon | 16 May 2016 1:58 p.m. PST |
Mierce are indeed works of art and hard to match. |

Scibor Miniatres in Poland do great figures and their bases are amazing all by themselves. They have some of the best dwarves around. |
tosattearp | 17 May 2016 12:29 p.m. PST |
Reaper indeed. Mirliton in Italy has a lot of old Grenadier line and Iron Wind Metals many classics from Ral Partha. Oh, and then Otherworld if you search for some authentic classic AD&D flovor. And do not forget to check Alternative Armies (from Scotland). A lot of wonderful miniatures old school style and very cheap prices (and you can also buy them already Painted!) |

As people have said it depends what you're after and what you count as 28mm. Mierce make probably the best fantasy miniatures on the market but they're barely 28mm and their range is limited. You couldn't put together an army of Mierce figures; it's really just centrepieces. Reaper by contrast have a huge range of figures, but the quality is variable. Their "strength in depth" is not always amazing, either; they'll probably have a figure that matches what you're after, but often not a lot of variety on that subject. While GW's fantasy offerings over the last couple of years have not been to my taste at all, and are a bit all over the place scale-wise, there are still some great figures, often from their older ranges, lurking in their range. Most of the LotR range is excellent, too, and closer to true 28mm. What's left of the Warhammer Forge range is still excellent for the most part. Foundry (in their guise as Warmonger) also do some really nice 28mm-ish fantasy figures, but concentrated in a couple of areas (mostly orcs and the like) and expensive even by Foundry standards. Avatars of War have a fairly impressive and growing range in the GW style. Dark Sword have some wonderful figures but as with Mierce they are essentially a hero-and-centrepiece line and are 28mm only in name; many of their figures are huge. I want to say there are dozens of manufacturers out there making really good but relatively small ranges, so it really depends what you're after. True 28mms are a rarity in fantasy circles these days, too. |
