Hi all

I was just looking through Amazon's ACW books and noted that Earl J. Hess has two books that sound the same by their descriptions.

The recent:
Civil War Infantry Tactics: Training, Combat, and Small-Unit Effectiveness Hardcover – 2015
link

And older:
The Rifle Musket in Civil War Combat: Reality and Myth – 2008
link

Is the newer one a revised version of the older?
Is it worth getting both?

Thanks for any info.

I thought the Rifle Musket book was pretty good…

They are two different books with a little over lap in some areas – Skirmishing for example relates both tactics and to weapon capability – so there are sections on it in both books.

The two are excellent studies and well worth getting but I would recommend reading them in the order they were published not because one is an update of the other but the tactics book adds further context to the weapons one and is more effective that way round.

Thanks guys.

I'll put them both on my Wish List.

One of the authors that I consider for limited space on my shelves whenever he publishes something new. Great reads. He and Shea wrote one of the best campaign studies in their "Pea Ridge" book.
