Inspired by the "how often do you play solo" thread, since sometimes you play solo because nobody else is interested in the same subject. This question is interesting to me because there are SO MANY popular, easy to game periods that have countless rules and figures available that are widely distributed. You can practically fall into these popular periods/genres with no effort on your part required at all (except to spend some geld). I salute you for your individualism/contrariness. Please tell me what you game that falls into a rarely gamed category and why you persevere as an oddball- what with all the work required. For me it is: 1st Schleswig-Holstein War (yes, I said 1st!) I like the being on the cusp of all the new tactics and tech coming up and the foreshadowing of it with new small unit tactics. (company in column). I like that they still have colorful uniforms and that the battles are small. I like having a reason to field what is normally a minor country. It is all almost quaint, if one can ever say that about warfare and armies) and not anywhere as serious in the consequences as so many other conflicts (the war ended more as a result of changes in the diplomatic mood than in any cataclysmic battle or event). What about you? |

I game French Indochina, but that is only moderately obscure. I love the Pacific theater in WWII, and sometimes that seems like an obscure theater! |

Either Zorro or late 1600s/1700s Spanish North America Soldados de Cuera fights. Ignore the rare Winchester or revolver in the hands of the Indios for the latter. |

For me, it is the First Russo-Turkish War of Catherine II (the Great), 1769-1774, which ultimately wrested the Crimea from the Ottoman Empire. Lots of innovations by the Russians that presaged tactics later employed by Napoleon I and his contemporaries -- extensive use of light troops, infantry advancing in divisional squares to negate Ottoman superiority in cavalry, greatly-improved logistical services, land operations timed to coincide with naval operations. I used to game GNW and considered it obscure – just about had to hand carve my own armies. Nowadays you can't move for figures, uniform guides, books and rules. Just goes to show that today's obscure is tomorrow's Cool thing to do. |

Maybe not so obscure now but in the past, I gamed The French Intervention into Mexico 1862 – 1865 and the Moro Rebellion 1901 – 1903. Both periods generated some wonderfully colorful and enjoyable games. |

I do a fair bit of the Franco-Austrian War of 1859, which feels much more obscure than its big brothers of the Crimea, 1864, 1866 and 1870. Senussi revolt 1916 (also a bit mainstream these days). Boring old East Africa in WW1. I've done the Indian invasion of Goa twice, as well as the Indo-Pakistan War. |

Depends on what you call obscure. Is the NYW obscure? More so then WSS, but not in the same league as French in Mexico. I do TYW, which ain't obscure unless you compare it to ECW. |

I intentionally research the obscure military history so I have articles on many of them. Internationally, I like the Greek revolution and the Balkans war as well as the Danish 1848 civil war. But those are not obscure enough. The research on the Russian in Central Asia was fun and hard. The African sa heal articles were a challenge. In America, I did many mini-books on the military history of the native tribes prior to 1850. The book on the filibuster operations provided several surprises. |

2nd Boer War, but it is not that obscure. It is just the most obscure that I play. Does the FPW count? |

It's not so obscure now but when I started playing it 20-25 years ago the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 was pretty uncommon. As far as historicals go, the most obscure now would probably be medieval (13th century-ish) naval, primarily set in the Baltic. Another obscure thing I game is the assault on Arthur's castle at the end of Army of Darkness. |

I once had 15mm Flower Wars armies for both Aztecs and Tlaxcallans for DBA 1.0… army changes in subsequent editions fostered merging troops from both armies into the newer Aztec army. I have themed a few warbands for Frostgrave from Runequest: Ducks, Lunars, and Morokanth. How about 28mm Traveller skirmsh using FiveCore, I am working on Droyne and K'kree groups right now. |
