cleaning out the basement. I have lots of 1s and 2s of figures that I'll never do anything with. Can I just bin them (for the landfill)? Or is there another way to get rid of these bits?

Beowulf Fezian07 May 2016 10:18 a.m. PST

Give them away. I am sure there will be takers. Post it here on TMP, or take them to the next con you attend.

you can take them to a recycling center. chances are they are lead free anyways.

Get the Leaf Out 4 Fun can use them. They run painting events at cons. FREE just paint sonethibg and take it home.

Probably not ideal for landfill. Lead will end up in the water table eventually.

Take them to the local club or shop and give them away. Good to entice the next generation or fill out someone's unit.

Melt them down if you know anyone who casts?

Don't know where you live, but take them to a local convention and pit them on a table with a sign that says "free"

Or you could mention what size and era the figures are and maybe folks on here might be interested in them.

I'm looking for 4 each American War for Independence 28mm Front Rank American cavalry to bring an existing unit up to 12 figures.

Also need 3 each 28mm Old Glory AWI Lauzun's Legion cavalry to bring an existing unit up to 12 figures.

"Don't know where you live, but take them to a local convention and pit them on a table with a sign that says "free""

Sounds like a plan.

I tend to give them away to interested parties – for example a colleague of mine was looking to get his son into painting figures and wargaming. He ended up with a load of Warhammer plastic sprues that had been sitting in my spares box for ages.

You could also group them into period bundles and sell them for pennies a figure.
I've picked through similar bundles and added Spanish and Russian napoleonics. You find enough for a gun crew, some line infantry, a couple of cavalry and a mounted officer and there's enough for the beginning of a Sharp Practice force.
A few loose ww2 figures and you have some flavour pieces/base for FoW or Chain of Command.

There aren't that many really. Maybe I'll put out the horses and sell them, but the rest aren't worth the time to write down what they are. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

I do have some small lots of old junk that is worth calling out, and I'll list those as soon as my membership is renewed.

I wonder whether 35 year old Hinchcliffe figures will get any takers….

Dear Idontbelieveit

Why get rid of them? Surely you have a place you can use them? For example, a stand with a wagon on it can always use a guard or two, or put a few scale crates in the back and have them loading or unloading them. You can do minor conversions and use them on regular stands.

I do imagi-nations and one of the ways I use up packs that I bought as impulse buys is to convert them to gun crew for the Princess' army where I have a story of each regiment having it's regimental gun, used only on gala and holidays to fire off fireworks for the Princess. (She likes fireworks). The story goes that the regimental colonels all compete with each other to have the best and most outlandish costumes for these crews. So I have Manchu bannermen, Zulus, Amazons, Opera goers, Indians and all sorts of wild and wonderful costumes in these tiny worthless guns. It's like the Mummers day parade.

Lots of good options here.

You could also offer them to TMP members too, for some money or free, and if they pay for the shipping.

I suspect a number of people might be interested in them, and would be very appreciative of that.

Chris Palmer07 May 2016 2:11 p.m. PST

Don't disregard any old figures, they are now being collected again by folks feeling the pangs of nostalgia! Or those who never gave theirs up to begin with.
I'm sure there is more than one person on these forums that would take them all for free in a blind offer, simply for the cost of postage.

Grelber07 May 2016 3:51 p.m. PST

Variation on Chris' suggestion: I'm sure there are folks here who would pay for shipping of the whole lot, pull out what they want, and list the rest for others to buy/have for the cost of shipping.

There are frequent adds on TMP for one each of some figure.

I'm one of those that would pick through bundles of figures to sort and pick out interesting casts.

It explains why my lead pile keeps growing with various Napoleonics, AWI, ACW and WW2 forces. I finally started trimmjng down from the other shiny projects in an attempt to bring a little sanity to my hobby.

I agree: give them away at a convention, you local gaming store, or even the "free" section of Craigslist.

35 year old Hinchcliffe? Post a picture; I and others might be interested.

I've taken a bunch, put 25 cents on them & sold the whole box for $20. USD Also given them free @ times to people who were interested .

princeman08 May 2016 6:06 a.m. PST

Hey, my doctor says I need the lead, got a…a lead deficiency, yeah, s lead deficiency, dat's the ticket.

Old Contemptibles11 May 2016 3:08 p.m. PST

Yep, just give them away. I try to give them to people I game with regularly. Lots of times I end up using in a game anyway, but I didn't have to paint them and I don't have to store them.
