I am always annoyed when actors in a Sword and Stuff moviectwirksxhis sword.
Why do they do that? Is there any school of sword play where this is taught or encouraged?
Why do they do that in movies? Is it to say "I am a real badass. I'm not afraid of dropping my broadsword!"

I figured it came as an evolution of the Salute in Fencing. Not sure if Asian fighting techniques have their variant of this.

Boasting and demonstrations of skill has always been part of the build up to combat. Done well and the combat does not happen by out phyking your foe.

Movies exaggerate this but in a way it is realistic.

Blame kung fu movies

It's even a Jedi trait.

There are plenty of eunuchs that can attest to its ineffectiveness. Having to stop in mid conflict to pick up your noodles does not intimidate anyone.

Same reason all the gunslingers do the fancy maneuver when putting their pistols back in the holster.

Maybe they are all trying to be TJ Laser?

That was only an issue with Picts and Celts who like to fight naked.

I've heard all the arguments about how pointless and dumb "sword-twirling" is, BUT…

I've done years of fencing, Dark Age re-enactment, and Chinese sword forms, and let me tell you, there's always time for a flourish, and everybody does it to some extent.

If you can hold a sword, and not feel the urge to give it a bit of a swish about, I feel bad for you.

Spent a long time fencing in my youth, and it was drilled into us that there is no strength in your wrist, so don't use it during bouts. But yeah, can't beat a good flourish!

Dislike sword twirling almost as much as the leaping attack with a sword like in Troy.
