"Alexander Prokhorenko was battling to free the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. But he found himself surrounded by Islamic militants. He feared that he would be captured, tortured, killed and his body mutilated.

He preferred to die with dignity.

So he called in an airstrike on his own position.

That was his contribution to liberating Palmyra from ISIS terrorists -- and to Russian glory. It was also his end. He was 25 years old.

His death was announced March 24.

And so the legend begins…"

You guys do know that while a transcript was released, the Russians never released the actual voice recording? Why?

Even NPR doubts parts of this story. No doubt he died, probably did call artillery on his own position, but all that patriotic language in the last moments of his life? Seems to be some embellishment by Russia in a time when her people are wary of losing lives overseas.

The story sounded like total ballhooks right from the first report.

Russian Rambo???

Name one Rambo movie where Rambo died in :-)

GarrisonMiniatures02 May 2016 2:08 a.m. PST

As I recall, originally Rambo was supposed to die in the first movie but they changed the ending.

OK, all this Rambo bs about Prokhorenko appeared in Western media. The transcript was first published in French media and then was translated into other languages. In Russian media it was reported that he called fire upon himself during the mission near Palmyra – and it happened before the transcript.
Also, one of the few things that is still there, you're not getting the Hero of Russia for nothing. He did what he thought is right, all the rest is not really that important.

The man is dead. He lost his life in the service of his country. Whatever your view of the politics, the man is due respect, please.

I don't think anyone disrespected Mr.Prokhorenko nor his sacrifice, nobody has.

What I would like to do is call out manipulation by the Russian govt. in creating a propaganda tirade worthy of Cold War heights. The released transcript reads more like the lines in a B-movie about North Korea.

He served is country and did his duty. RIP Soldier …

Tango0102 May 2016 10:51 p.m. PST

Propaganda… all countries did the same my friend Cwlinsj… not only the Russians… (smile)

How many histories we have read quite similar to this one (and many not true!) from the "other side"?.

Hey!… they even made some movies! … (smile)

I was watching Russia Today when Prokhorenko was killed and some times subsequent so I heard first hand the Russian take on events. Very measured as far as I saw so that was how Russia wanted the world to see its reaction to his death. A brave lad anyhow.

It was quite unlike the Rambo drivel or indeed the hysteria of most of the Western media on pretty much anything these days.

Of course RT is outward facing PR/Propoganda but it is well done. Smart enough to get Larry King too. I've no idea of the Russian domestic coverage but few here would have.

Jemima Fawr03 May 2016 9:04 a.m. PST

How about commemorating some of the dead Russian heroes that were sent to Ukraine?

Oh no, of course they 'volunteered while on leave' and their mothers are harassed and threatened with prosecution when they say otherwise…

Tango0103 May 2016 10:48 a.m. PST

This is a door you don't want' to open Jemina… think in how many "examples" like this you can found in the "Western" Army/soldiers…

Don't understand why you show so angry with that brave soldier ending…

Russians made harm to you or your family?…

Don't be silly.

Jemima – Take your own advice.

Also, one of the few things that is still there, you're not getting the Hero of Russia for nothing.

Isn't that an award on par with the Victoria Cross and Medal of Honor?

I know what the award criteria is for the MoH: There can be no question (that any lesser award adequately describes the epic badassery involved); and I think that the VC is about the same. Is that the case for the Hero of Russia?
