I have been looking high and low for actual in period pictures of British officers quarters using campaign furniture from the later 1800's or safari's in Africa or India from the same time period (camps, tents, etc.). Can anyone recommend a good book or place to look (I have been googling all different ways)

Try The Army and Navy Cooperative Society. There are pages from their 1907 catalog on line, and maybe some others. It was about 1400 pages,I think.

I believe it was this catalog that was shown on an episode of The Woodwright's Shop,Roy Underhill's PBS show on traditional woodworking. He had a guest demonstrating Victorian camp gear, and how to make it,including a "rough-ground" camp chair, and a collapsible bookshelf.

Edit:The shows in question are Season 34,episodes 8 and 9.

All of these should be available on Inter Library Loan, rather than buying your own, the first two are 'Out of Print' but I have seen 'Safari' hiding in some out of the way bookshops.

'British Campaign Furniture: Elegance under Canvas' by Nicolas Brawer has a fair number of photos and sketches of British Officers with their furniture.

'Safari' by Bartle Bull has some information but not much on military.

'Campaign Furniture' by Christopher Schwarz if you want to build your own – get it direct from Lost Art for a fraction of the price the grifters on Amazon are asking.

If you have a big city or university library nearby, see if they have back issues of The Illustrated London News for the period. These often unusual angles : top, back, sides.

I have Schwarz's book and make replica's in 1:12 scale I even am "introducing" a line of 1:12 hardware on Shapeways (not sure if I can link to it but I really don't care if I sell any I had it made for me). I have some pdf's of catalogs and they have a few contemporary paintings but it is so hard to find a period photograph of an officer's room or tent. The furniture I can reproduce in fact I am working on some 1:12 double guns and a period folding gun rack also but it's the little details I want to be able to reproduce, the "look" of a tent or room

Thanks for all the links.
