I was interested to see that the very first miniatures produced by the famous fantasy manufacturer Grenadier Models were American Revolution. That was back in the 1970s when I was buying Hinchliffe. Surprisingly, I never got any. I have never even seen any. That was back in the day when a printed catalog was all the collector needed. Considering the overall quality of the Grenadier range, I would be interested in seeing what they looked like. And if they are decent looking, I might even be interested in getting a unit or two. It was a large range, if the catalog was to believed, even having figures for all 4 Continental Dragoons. As I remember from their 25mm Carthaginian range, the horses were not all that good though. I did get quite a few of their other historical 25mm ranges and liked them a lot. They were a cut above other manufacturers. Anybody have any pictures? And here's a real shot in the dark. Does anybody have unpainted figures they would like to sell to a good home? |

Heck I'm so old I remember when GHQ produced 20mm (?) Prussian Grenadiers, in mitres, with separate heads Sent from my iPhone |

Hi Winston, I once owned a handful of these when I was in junior high school, back in 1974 or 1975. My family lived in Delaware and some friends took me to a military modelling/wargaming con near Philadelphia. The Grenadier AWI figures that I bought at the con were a handful of Hessian jaegers on foot, maybe a dozen. On the plus side, the sculpting, casting, and proportions were decent. On the negative side, the poses were very static and the figures were really small for 25s. In fact, it seems like they fit pretty well with Airfix 1/76 plastics. I am sorry to tell you that these figures are long gone. For some reason, I have a very vague memory of seeing some mounted figures of this range. I either saw them in person at the con or maybe in the pages of Wargamer's Digest (remember the wargame figures photos in every issue?) I'm a little reluctant to say this because I can't say it with certainty, but I kind of remember that I didn't care for the horses. However, I still have my beat-up copy of "The Wargamer's Guide to the American Revolution" by Z&M Publications, which I bought at the same con. I spent $3.00 USD on it! Jeff |

One last thing: remember "Little Wars" magazine from the 70s? The people at TSR actually published a historical gaming magazine, back when they had some involvement with the historical gaming scene. I recall seeing a Grenadier ad or two in that publication. I have a handful of "Wargamer's Digest" and "Little Wars" back issues. It wouldn't take me too long to see if I couldn't dig up something about Grenadier's old AWI 25s. |

They were made in Springfield Pa. So it's not a stretch if they sold them at Widener cons in Chester. Airfix size? That's small for 25mm. |

I remember seeing them at the MFCA shows which were the only wargame related cons back in the 70s. Very nice figures as I recall. I want to say the sculptor was a guy named Ron Wall? |

You might try reaching out to Terence Gunn a member on here who published a book and get is getting ready to update (based on yesterdays post) on Grenadier Miniatures |

I remember them as well and was looking for some awhile back while working on a "25mm" AWI project with Custom Cast and 'S' Range Minifigs. I was unable to locate any figures or a catalog listing of them. Ron Wall may have sculpted them – I don't know about that – but he did sculpt his own range of 25mm AWI figures and I have some of those in my AWI collection. Would be nice to find at least a unit of old Grenadier figures for the AWI. |

I have about 50 or so mystery AWI figures that I do not recognize. If I get a chance I'll take a few pix. |

I bought a few Wall miniatures back in the day. They would not be my first choice today. |

I have some Grenadier Queens Rangers light infantry. They are very small and more like 20mm. The Minifigs dwarf them. They also had very, very thick bases. Overall they are pretty crude. |

Thanks for that. I guess I didn't miss anything. |

Doctor X's comments are on the money. Their size was closer to 20s. |

As I recall, the Grenadier horse from the mid-70's was often called "Harry the Happy Horse", as he/it had a distinctly smiling face. Perhaps not the best horse sculpt ever, but looking at them from 3 feet in semi-lit basements…they were OK! <grin> Ashurman |
