God morning

I have built me a Viking longhouse. At first I thought that I would buy me one of those MDF ones, but as they was quite expensive and need plenty of work anyway to be possible to use I thought I could build my own for a lesser cost. So far my house have cost me Zero money as all parts was in my buildmaterial pile.

The House mesure about 12x30cm, at least the base I built it on:) You can see more pictures of the bilding process here and a bunch of more pictures of the finished house here.

I hope you all will have a greate weekend !

Best regards Michael

Very nice work there! I see you went for the traditional smoke hole in the roof rather than at the gable ends.
--There has been a lot of research recently on the problem of smoke evacuation from thatched houses--most of the info supporting overhead smoke holes was derived from African iron age culture buildings,as no thatched building from the dark ages remains in Europe.
However, problems with having a smoke hole over a fire pit include letting rain in, and causing an updraft which sucks cold air from the wall areas and causes sparks to fly into the thatch!
A Danish example of the gable end smoke hole…

A recent 'Time Team' programme on UK TV showed a dark age round house reconstruction where there was no smoke hole at all, and the smoke filtered through the thatch, incidentally killing insects in the thatch.
I suspect it would allow smoking meat/fish in the rafters too!
I would be interested if anyone else has any thoughts on this subject?

Very impressive building! Many years ago I let me built one from Barbīs Bunker, which if I am right informed was a forerunner from Architects of War and then still built houses for custumer. Your house is at similiarly good and you had not to pay many dollars for it ;-)

As always execuse any errors english isnīt my own language
