I am wanting to do this demi-brigade, but am finding major conflicting information. Lienhart and Humbert plate 53 shows the to have violet collar, cuffs, lapels and turnbacks. While the osprey book MAA 98 "Dutch-Belgian Troops of the Napoleonic Wars" says the facings were all white.

I really like the violet facings just because they are unusual on a dark blue coat, but i am not sure which is correct.

Does anyone have anything finite that can clarify this?

Thanks in advance,

Terry

Presumably you meant 12th battalion not demi-brigade as there were only 7 demi-brigades.

If the 12 battalion, then in 1803lapels, cuffs, collars and cuff flaps would have been white piped red; turn backs red piped white, turn back numbers in white, and piping to pockets etc would have been rd.

In 1804, lapels, cuffs, collars became orange piped orange , cuff flaps remained white piped red, turn backs became orange piped orange, turn back numbers stayed white, piping to pockets etc became orange.

Thanks Prince. That seems to agree with the Osprey MAA book. I can't help but wonder where L&H got their violet facings????

Did the uniform changes of 1803 happen? The Shur paintings of Dutch troops in Hamburg circa 1807-08 show them in a mix of the old blue coats, with the pre 1803 facing colours, and the new white uniforms.

Terry 37,
I think you are mistaken, the 12th battalion in Lienhart/Humbert shows the uniform Prince of Essling mentions. At least here : link

Major Bloodnock,
can you please explain. Afaik the Suhr plates give the 1803 or the new uniform. For some batttalions (eg the 12th) the facing colors changed in 1804 byt the way.

Brownbear, you're absolutely right, my error – thank you. I meant to reference plate 54 which shows the 12th with purple/violet facings in 1804. That was the uniform I was asking about.

If I've done this right, this link will take you to the referenced plate.

Yes,
that's the 12th in the 1804 uniform. They changed officially the uniform by ordonnance of july 12th 1804
Their color became then yellowbrown (geelbruin in dutch) (which maybe look like orange?) on lapels, cuffs, collars, turnback and pockets. Piping was also the same colour.

Brwnbear, Ah, I see now. The L&H plate does not show purple, as I thought I was seeing it, but the brownish shade. My error again. Thank you very much for the clarification!
