Does anyone know of any Austrians in 28mm that exist for the period 1848-49?

Not yet out But Black Hussar is bringing out a range of the German Unification wars. The Prussians are already out and they are gorgeous!

I am looking for dedicated figs for the Italian wars?

I was thinking that with minor conversion (mainly what you do with the pom pom), the Perry British Intervention Force #8, Line Infantry Marching, could be used for a fairly wide variety of nations. I haven't tried it yet, but I was thinking of using them for Austrian as well. I'm not looking for as as specific a look as you, though.

For post-Napoleonic 19th century in 28mm, other than Franco Prussian, ACW, and Crimean (maybe Italian Wars if you stick with Mirliton), it seems that you have to patch together figs from other lines to get anything complete.

Have you checked out Battle Honors? The are designed for later than 1848, but you might find some that would be of use for 1848/9?

I have been looking long and hard for 28mm Austrian figures for the wars of 1848 in Italy and Hungary. The bad news is that as far as I can see there aren't any. There are figures in 15mm and there are 28mm figures for 1859 and 1866 but nothing for 1848. In short there is nothing for Radetzky to command from off the shelf. At the moment, the answer seems to be conversion.

Cavalry are relatively straight forward as they were little changed from 1815. As an example, you can leave Perry hussars as they are or maybe chop a few mm off the top of their shakos being careful to preserve and reattach the pompom etc. Infantry and artillery are more difficult.

I have found two suitable Perry figures as starting points for German line infantry. One is the Christino infantry with stovepipe shako and the other is the Bavarian National Guard in overalls. In both cases you chop off the top of the shako at the level of the upper band and trim off any badge. Then cover the shako with Liquid Green Stuff or similar to create the oilskin cover. With the Bavarians you also have to trim off the rear peak and build longer coat tails. For Grenadiers swop the head with a Napoleonic grenadier filling in the front plate with Green Stuff to represent more fur. (Though the Bavarians take more work, I prefer them as their equipment is closer to Austrian in look.) Jägers are more difficult as I have yet to find an appropriate body to start on.

For Hungarians, start with a Napoleonic figure, convert the shako as above and simply add long coat tails.

For artillery I am looking at Dutch-Belgian artillery as the start point and swopping in a jäger head.

The staff can come from Napoleonic figures with appropriate head work and so on. Many mid 19th Century figure in frock coats are useful as long as you can put them on an Austrian horse.

It is quite a bit of work, but until someone produces the right figures, it will have to do for me. So far, the end results have been quite pleasing.

Artilleryman,

Thanks for the heads up on the Bavarian National Guard. I think we have the same ideas for the Austrians although the greatcoat was folded and not rolled. The Perry Mins Carlist War FFL Lancers w/ czapka are also perfect for KuK Uhlans.

The Hungarian Insurrectio can also be easily be converted for Honved and National Guard.

Also have a look at the BIF range. The Hussars and mounted officers can be converted for Hungarians.
