It seems to me there was a time when it was popular for many troop types to include a musician to inspire the troops.

Not so much any more.

Do you miss the musicians?

Bashytubits19 Apr 2016 10:09 a.m. PST

Nope.

No. It was cheesy.

Yesthatphil19 Apr 2016 10:25 a.m. PST

No … they were fantasy even in many historical armies frown

Not if the scope is properly aligned.

No. I thought the rule was rather stupid.

"I got a trombone player. That means I get a re-roll on my Immunity from Panic rolls."
"Sorry. You're undead. (Or Parthian…) You need a xylophone."

Yes. Dumb rule.

Winston Smith19 Apr 2016 10:56 a.m. PST

As figures to enhance the "diorama" of a command stand, they are nice. As a rules mechanic, dumb.

Der Krieg Geist19 Apr 2016 12:30 p.m. PST

I sort of always liked them, in fantasy armies.

LOL Parzival

I like musician miniatures, and I think they were fine in WFB 3rd. People get fired up for their music. Why not?

The squeezebox of Welk

This is -5 on you "to save roll" or start dancing the polka to the accordion music for the next five turns.

Wunnerful, ah wunnerful…turn off the bubble machine, um.

thumbs up
That takes me back

me mum always watched Mr Welk

There can be drinking games associated with it- better if inebriated. Kitsch is popular -just for the outfits' sake. Memories of youth. The Champagne Lady is completely toasted.
Nothing else on until 'Nature'.

Lupulus19 Apr 2016 2:28 p.m. PST

Yes, I miss them.
No front rank is complete without champion, standard and musician.

altfritz19 Apr 2016 2:51 p.m. PST

All our units have musicians. :-)

Fantasy Musician? Please explain.

jpattern220 Apr 2016 5:56 a.m. PST

I have musicians in all of my fantasy armies, even Orcs and Skaven, because I like the look. I couldn't care less whether there are special rules for them.

fullerena20 Apr 2016 6:33 a.m. PST

You're right, musicians are cool. I think the bigger issue is the lack of them in SF forces – the handwave that everyone has an MP3 player isn't good enough when only orks, sisters of battle, and chaos space marines bother to bring instruments to the field. Where are the floating wraithbone xylophones of the Eldar?

Mute Bystander20 Apr 2016 6:42 a.m. PST

+1 jpattern2

There were rules for musicians? Not in any rules I played! Holy High Note, Batman!

Wait, let me guess, GW games?

Pedrobear20 Apr 2016 7:35 a.m. PST

Love them. Got to have them.

jpattern220 Apr 2016 8:46 a.m. PST

The Eldar had three different musician miniatures.

Squats had a guy with a shoulder mounted boom box.

fullerena20 Apr 2016 10:39 a.m. PST

I'm pretty sure the Guard got music too, at least via Gaunt's Ghosts – don't know the lines before 2e. Boom boxes don't count though, unless you've got a DJ with turntables.

I am going to have to buy more musicians for my armies though. They were always the default in Warhammer, and a front rank just doesn't feel right without a ridiculous standard and someone making noise.

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP20 Apr 2016 11:34 a.m. PST

Make that two turntables and a microphone…

I think they look proper; not sure I want magic advantage to having them there.

As for the bubbles, I'd have to quote Newt.

Every regiment of the Army of Mordor (and The Army of the Isen)is complete with Leader, Champion, Standard Bearer and Musician. Except for the skirmish units, those just have Leaders.
I enjoyed the rules relating to the specific individuals which is why WFB 3rd Edition is still my favorite fantasy ruleset.

altfritz20 Apr 2016 3:33 p.m. PST

Not even a little bit.
