I recall reading an account of how some Vikings beat the old "chain across the river" ploy. As I recall they started rowing like mad towards the chain, then everyone ran towards the back of the boat (lifting the bow up) then after the bow went over, they all ran to the front off the boat to clear the chain. That would be cool. |

The chain in our TV fantasy show is so high that I don't know if that trick would work. It is so high that if they removed the mast and decorations they might be able to lever their way under it. |

I didn't care for the whole battle scene at the forts. The forts look like they're from a cheap movie on ScyFy. I also doubt that the Franks would have sent out a force of only crossbowmen to engage the Vikings in the open. |

This series of Vikings is pretty lame. The lack of action during the first few episodes has made it drag and Wessex attack on the Keystone Mercian's was laughable and predictable. But mostly the The mash up of history is starting to get more that a bit bothersome. It think the dodgy forts on the river were supposed to be the prefabricated constructions that William the Bastard was said to have erected in 1066. It seems the idea must have been passed down from his great ancestor. I did like the ease with which the guys picked up and carried the light onager but I didn't notice anyone carrying the ammunition. |

Is any of the outfits worn by the Frank's even close to the right time period? Much of the show seems very medevil to me? I still like the show though Regards Russ Dunaway |

Old Glory, probably not, it's like the fact that the Vikings have yet to discover the helmet and the Anglo-Saxons wear helmets better fitted to Cavalrymen of the Tudor Armies. I watch it, I'm not really sure why but in many ways I think it's about as historical as Game of Thrones. I think that people like Canute and Harald Hadrada have to be spinning in their graves. So I watch it, like I watched Excalibur and GoT, realizing that it's fantasy. |

I can accept 'Vikings' as a sort of fantasy Viking saga, there are allusions to known historical facts, but, let's be honest Ragnarr Lođbrók himself may not even have existed! -- He is a sort of King Arthur figure in Norse sagas.Semi legendary! I enjoy watching it, as a sort of substitute while waiting for the next season of Game of Thrones! |

Is there anything in Norse legend about Ragnar being a junkie? |

I would hazard a bet that much of how we veiw history has huge elements of fantasy tangled in? Regards Russ Dunaway |

Certainly, since history was mostly written for the person who paid for it in the ancient and medieval world – I suspect at least some bias in any source, if not outright fabrications! But I guess, we have to start somewhere, and getting a consensus on what we think is real is the best we can do! |
