Not quite a 'Boardgame with Miniatures' the new Thunderbirds is most definitely a 'Boardgame with Toys!"

Got my Kickstarter package along with the not-yet-retailly-released expansions this weekend. This is the most playing with toys boardgame I've ever tried! And high quality toys they are. The characters are always zooming about the board, hopping in and out of all the fab vehicles (including FAB1 and FAB2 ^,^).

It's a co-operative game for 1–4 players, plus an optional 0–1 player as the baddie, The Hood. Like Pandemic (by the same designer) it is largely a game of co-operatively losing. Most likely the natural disasters will kill you before the Hood manages to conquer the world with one of his nefarious schemes, or maybe various events The Hood sets off will distract you from stopping his latest Scheme in time…

The basic game comes packed with high quality components.

Of the upcoming expansions:

Tracey Island is a must, adding more vehicles, characters, and miniatures for all of the little pod vehicles to use instead of cardboard chits. Oh, and Thunderbird 2 opens up to carry the little pod vehicles around the globe to where they are needed for averting disasters.

The Hood expansion is needed to use the optional Baddie player. And adds more fun toys.

Above & Beyond expansion is a mixed bag. A few cards that are nice to add to the FAB deck. Optional rules for levelling up the characters during play that will be interesting to try with an experienced group of players. A sandtimer which I will never use. And some lovely new toys — Disaster Vehicles, that are desperately looking for some houserule work to incorporate better into the game. (I've already got some ideas brewing for that!) As written, the Disaster Vehicles don't interact with the board at all, unlike all the other toys, they just sit to the side when you get them. I'll be working on deploying them on the board where they are unlocked rather than just issuing them to the player who unlocked it.
