GW has a picture of some of the forth-coming wood elf army in the news section of the on-line store: link Glade Guard. They look like a plastic regiment to me, done more in the style of the Bretonnian infantry than the Empire plastics - that is, the bodies and limbs are one piece, you just add different heads and accessorize (I am guessing from one little picture, of course). I have been looking forward to this release, and hoping that the new wood elves would look tough, like the older elves of Scarloc's generation - the newer elves look stiff and not very threatening (notable exceptions being the Way Watchers and the HE Shadow Elves). These new Glade Guard dudes look pretty promising to me. Anybody know of any other pictures of the new wood elves? |

I haven't seen any new pictures, but I will say IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! Wood Elves have been around since the beginning, yet they're the last of the original armies to actually get a book. Maybe this'll give me incentive to dust off my figures and actually play a game with them. |

I should have said: follow the link, then go to the bottom and click Warhammer under "sneak peeks". BTW, there is a nice new character model for the Lord of the Rings line. |

I haven't seen any other pics beyond these. Though I noticed that the UK websites seem to get the sneak shots a week or two ahead of the US site. You may want to check that one to see if they put something else up. I agree with you on the delays with the Wood Elves. Erik |

yup, it's been a long time since anything was done with the tree huggers - I can't wait! |

I just posted a few days ago my dislike for GW's new pricing structure, especially on the plastics, but I sure love the new high elf models. Curious as to what those will price out at? Rabbit |

Yes the WE have been long overdue for both a book and better figures. Perhaps the Chaos Dwarfs will get a... erm face lift next. |

"...but I sure love the new high elf models. Curious as to what those will price out at?" The high elves or the wood elves, Rabbit? The high elves are out already. |

I would have been fine if they never did the wood Elves, as I have always felt that they wouldn't ever field full armies, and they wouldn't probably leave their forests to fight elsewhere according to much of the fluff. Plus I abhor fighting the nimble little mooks... 8)=

Interesting set of sneak peeks this time around. I think you're right, the Wood Elves definitely look like "Bretton-style" plastics. What's with all the new High Elf figures all of a sudden? Their army book needs work, not the figure range. I like the "cthulhu-head" genestealers over in the 40K section as well. Very amusing. Rich |

"What's with all the new High Elf figures all of a sudden?" Maybe something to do with the Lustria campaign this summer? |

Thunderbolt Mountain's stuff is better. Although the GW stuff will, I assume, be more readily available on retail shelves... |

They wer my first fantasy army. Even back in 5th edition, I ended up with lots of different lines - Fortress Figures for spearmen, Harlequin for scouts and a griffin, GW for dryads, eagles, bowmen and those stupid, stupid wardancers (who looked like an 80's british pop band). I made two chariots from a balsa woood base surounded by elf shields, and used the glade riders horses to pull them because glade riders just sucked for the points. Platic infantry might help a lot. There was no way any sane person would build a unit of spears with their metals, even back then. I'm sure they interpreted the lack of sales with the army being unappealing. Now though... Thunderbolt mountain - thunderboltmountain.com 20 Archers - $25 USD ... 20 Spears - $30 USD ... 6 Swordmen - $12 USD ... 6 Mounted Figures - $20 USD ... 10% discount for orders over $100 USD ... I'm ready to toss my old army and get those now. Nazrat - A WHFB army is only like 50 - 100 guys or so, that doesn't seem like so many :) |

Those Wood Elves are kind of cool, aren't they? Damn it; no, no, NO! (smacks self on head a few dozen times) Really, I have better things to spend my money on. No, really.... Seriously.... But why, oh why did I have to see a photo of my most favorite GW sycophant numbskull, Tom Schadle? Yeesh... blech. |

I just saw the plastic sprues for the new Wood Elf army (which will come, in the usual way, as spearmen and archers in two seperate boxes) the other day - I had meant to make my own post about the figures, as they are really beautiful (I would be tempted to say 'best plastics yet') but then, this board isn't very GW-friendly and mightn't have appreciated the news. With the almost-standard 16 figures per box, and at the usual GW price, these will be an excellent buy even if they don't include a command sprue - they may well, I just didn't see one and didn't think to ask at the time. I would describe them as 'massively multipose'; everything is seperate (each fig 2 x arms, 1 x legs, 1 x torsos, 1 x head with a choice of helmeted, hooded, bare-headed etc, and that's before any "accessories" or other weapons) plus the box includes a plethora of 'bits' including seperate robes, sashes, quivers and what can only be described as large lettuce-like leaves that I think will act as an outer layer clothing (from the painted minis they had on the poster, this looks much better than it sounds - basically allowing for a lot of 'layering' of clothing that you couldn't achieve with a single casting due to not being able to use undercuts, etc). The sprues include even more extras than usual - I noticed some small fairy-like creatures which may be a seperate 'swarm' type unit, or just for base decoration - the frames were literally packed to capacity unlike some of the more 'disappointing' releases I've seen where there seems to be a lot of unused space on the sprue. Because the figs are not 'tied' to their cloaks/robes/etc they will be very easy to pose in any way you like and still have the appropriate flowing / hanging / windblown look. They will also be very easy to 'detach from their robes', if you decide you want a plainer look or even, gasp, want to use them in a historical or other fantasy army (I know I will be!). Although I didn't have a model with me to compare sizes, they looked to have a slighter build which reminded me very much of the fine detail on the LOTR plastics. However, they seem taller than eg. the LOTR Elves so they will stil no doubt seem 'right' next to an Empire or Brettonian soldier - but my point is you could also use them alongside LOTR or any other 25mm figures without any real problems. Very versatile figures - you can put me down for several boxes just for conversion projects alone. The release date is sometime in September, which seems a painfully long time away, but such are the drawbacks of such lovely sneak previews ahead of time. |

"I would describe them as 'massively multipose'" Oho! That sounds good to me. I love playing with the human plastics for that very reason. Thanks for the info, ST. |

The models look very nice. Once I get all my other projects calmed down, might have to look at them (2nd hand or discount, of course) as an AoA army :) |

I got 3 shots of Archers and a shot of the info sheet showing the release date (august 2005) and listing the plastics boxes there will be. And on that...according to the sheet Glade Guard come in one box. Archers and Spear both in the same box. Aside from the Glade Guard box there are a Dryad box, Glade Rider box and of course the battalion set. You can find the pics on the usual forums (portent, dakka) or look in my yahoo group (i think you may need to sign up though): link |
Alxbates | 12 Apr 2005 11:54 a.m. PST |
Portent is down, presumably never to return. |
anarchistica | 12 Apr 2005 12:27 p.m. PST |
There is a "Temportent": link I've just uploaded another 5 pics of Archers and 1 pic that shows the Glade Guard boxed set allows you to make Glade Guard or Scouts. No spears to be seen. However, from what i've heard, they're there. They work like DE Warriors, so you can pick bow or spear, and for every unit of Glade Guard you can have a unit of Scouts. |

Yeah the Woodies are cool, but what gives with the ugly Elf mage? She could shave her dog's butt, photocopy it, and use it for her mugshot! She looks like Clyde Williams, shaved and in drag... EEEeeeeek!!! No way am I letting THAT in my army! Hmmm, is this intentional? GW don't want any models looking better than ALARIELLE, the Everqueen? Pppfff... |
Vanilla Gorilla | 12 Apr 2005 1:47 p.m. PST |
I'm just excited about the army book since my intention is to use my halfling models anyway. I've had a whole backstory kicking around in my head for years as to why a group of halflings would act and fight so much like wood elves. |

Privateer, If you have seen the "rammage" that IIRC Foundry packs in with their Elves you will have a good idea of what to expect. The fairies or nymphs or whatever they are are nicely detailed and work well as regular troops in 10-15mm or large creatures in 6mm armies. If they aren't a regular swarm unit you'll probably be able to take a load of 'spares' off peoples' hands for cheap after the release. |
