So far it's #6, but I haven't had a chance to watch many others of that genre. I also like Blue Gender for the war between Mecha and giant bugs – though it takes place mostly on Earth so is not really space warfare.

Space Battleship Yamato is a favorite from way back in the early 80's when I watched the original broadcast as Star Blazers. I'm in the middle of watching the fantastic 2199 remake.

For large scale fleet battles, I gotta go with 3 and 6.

Missing from the list is Knights of Sidonia (a Nextflix production) But not really big fleet battles.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Universal Century.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross.

Armored Trooper Votoms, especially the Pailsen Files.

While I like those all, when it comes to large scale space battles for me it Legend of Galactic Heroes.

Jakar Nilson09 Apr 2016 11:47 a.m. PST

Aim for the Top – Gunbuster
The Irresponsible Captain Taylor
Martian Successor Nadesico

(And it's not actually anime, but the space battles look like they're straight out of one: Il Était Une Fois… L'Espace)

5 & 6 for me.

Have a look at 'Heroic Age', mostly about one character but has a fair amount of space combat.

It's 6 for me, but that's mainly because getting ahold of anime is such a Bleeped text. It's either overly priced or unavailable (out of print or no translations). If anyone has a good source for DVDs, I'm all ears.

KTravlos11 Apr 2016 8:00 a.m. PST

boy wundyr. DVDs are hard to get. My solution in the US was to just pay for online streaming from Funimation (which had lots of stuff) and Crunchyroll. For 20$ a year I had lots of stuff available streaming.

Thanks KTravlos, I may have to look into that.

Legend of Galactic Heroes
Gundam Universal Century
Yamato 2199
Banner of the Stars
Heroic Age
Gall Force

Gall Force is rather unknown now days.
The Solnoid all female clones fighting a war of mutually assured destruction against the bio-mechanical Paranoid Axis forces.

KTravlos12 Apr 2016 1:00 a.m. PST

On man Gall Force. My fist sci fi anime, before I knew what anime was. Cool battles, but oh my bleak.
