Somehow, I look at that model and think 'one-way submarine' – the boat is waaaaay too small for the metalwork.

The open shield would drag in the water, which might stabilize the vessel when firing. Definitely not for open waters with higher waves. The gun crew would also have difficulty reloading, although well-placed rounds from a floatilla of small bats could cause chaos…if somehow they could actually move without sail or adequate oar power.

Maybe it could be towed into position for siege use? I know there were small cannon armed boats (with crews of 5?) used on lakes and rivers in Italian warfare of the time. Although they would have been armed with a much smaller cannon.

Reading the article tells us that the boat has a metal prow. The plan was for the boat to ram the target ship. The metal pointed prow would create damage or even possible a breech. At that point the shield would be lowered and the canon fired into the target ship through the damage/breech.

Like most of his ideas this was unworkable with the available technologies and materials. His ideas look great on paper but. . .
