Hey there, I've always loved the Napoleonic and Medieval times, and to go alongside my Napoleonic Armies, I thought I'd get some good Medieval miniatures.

I was thinking around 1200 to early 1400s (I don't like War of the Roses sorry)

I'm trying to look for soldiers like in the Battle of Grunwald, or in the Hundred Years War, things like that, where they had plate, but it was still heraldry, and not just halberds etc.

I know Essex are good, but they need a little more variation.

Something like this would be nice –

And casualties too :D

Vexillia has some nice 15mm stuff:

Not a big fan of Essex but Donnington New Era are good.

Corvus Belli, of course …Mirliton are great but the 'Communal' range is more 13th Century (no plate) and the 'Condottieri' 15th Century (so more like WotR) … Khurasan has some HYW figures worth looking at.

15mm.co.uk has the old TTG range which I love.

You don't have to limit yourself to a single manufacturer. Most of my Medieval figures are Essex, but to add some interesting items that Essex didn't offer I included Old Glory 15s, Corvus Belli, Donnington/New Era and Peter Pig. You can see how they look in diorama form in my Medieval Gallery at warin15mm.com/Medieval-.html

I might consider getting mixed troops of Essex and Vexillia, but has anyone got any good pics of the Vexilia models?

However, there might be a small problem mixing Essex with other manufacturers, because I compared some of my other 15mms to my Essex soldiers that I already have, and the Essex ones are about a head smaller.

Metal models prefferably please!

For 13th century, my blog link has various comparison photos including Mirliton, Black Hat, Essex, Khurasan, OG15s, Donnington

For late 14th to early 15th:
I'm currently working on a mix of medieval foot. The Minifigs figures have the smallest faces and hands but actually look okay next to Essex. The Vexillia Eastern European figures are a little bit taller than Essex. They match the Khurasan Early Swiss range pretty well. The Donnington NE figures are a touch larger.

For mounted, Minifigs do some great figures though the horses are less good. Donnington NE riders are roughly similar in size – the riders tend to be a bit smaller than their foot.
Vexillia mounted figures look pretty compatible with the Fighting 15 figures though the horses are smaller.

Old Glory 15mm also owns Rank and File War of the Roses range. a good range with excellant artillery.
Some customers liked Corvus Belli but they cannot be found with any depth. The Old Glory 15mm has a Hundred years War range and Crusaders as well.

Minifigs.

I find them to be a bit larger than the Essex though, e.g. about 16.5mm for their HYW figs compared to Essex's 15mm height, so about 10% larger, which means about a 6" height difference in real life. Essex minis are a bit more rotund, too.

The Rank and File range, carried by Old Glory, includes exactly the type of mounted knight shown in your picture (though in a pack that includes armored horses too).

Here's a shot of some that I painted:

I have decided that I am going to use Essex 15mm and Old Glory 15s.

However, does anyone know what the size difference is between the 2 in 15mm?
Pictures would help

The LH range do look quite nice, but are much larger than the Essex figs.

Whatever happened to Corvus Belli, since they generally seems to have received very favorable reviews?

Sadsad07 Apr 2016 7:13 a.m. PST

For old Glory, do I have to drill the holes in the hands for the weapons? Because I really cannot do that myself…

And Essex too?

Swampster08 Apr 2016 10:27 a.m. PST

Some Old Glory figures need drilling but most come with spear attached. The crusades period range spears are very thin and I think need replacing with wire spears. The later medieval range spears tend to be thicker.

Essex come with spears attached.
