Nice. Actually the horse holders generally were at the left end of a straight line of three other horses. As the troopers dismounted, they unhooked one end of a link strap from their bridle and hooked it on to the bit ring of the horse to their left. Then the horse holder on the left end held the reins of the horse to his immediate right . That is how he controlled all four horses. The link strap was relatively short. I forget, but probably about 16 inches long. Maybe less. I have done a fair amount of this myself when I used to do cavalry reenactment. Look at the scenes in the movie Gettysburg that show the federal cavalry on McPherson Ridge. You will see the horse holders at the bottom of the frame most of the time. Tom |
