This looks like a very promising lead. I note also how the researchers keyed in on a large pond at the start of the theorized route as an excellent place to water animals before starting the crossing. It's an ancient bed, proven by the samples from it's bottom. link |

If they can't isolate elephant poo from the rest, then it coulda been any herd crapping in that water, Suvarov's Cossacks, for example. I want proof. |

If they can't isolate elephant poo from the rest, then it coulda been any herd crapping in that water, Suvarov's Cossacks, for example. I want proof. Animal DNA also show mutations through the female's DNA. Those mutations take place in a manner that permits them to be used for dating the entire sequence,so there shouldn't be any difficulty showing an actual date. Already the bed from which the samples were taken shows an approximate 200BC date, so that's pretty close to the 218BC date for Hannibal, and probably right there once errors are factored in. But yeah……. proof is what the biologists are going for. |

It's interesting that a lot of sites mentioning this have elephants in the title but no mention in the meat of the story. |
