Following on rapidly from my last blog post are two more relating to the venerable Space Fleet game from Games Workshop. The first contains my musings on the combat system, or at least the bit where you drop dice into the box lid… link The second is an overview of the new content that was introduced in issue 139 of White Dwarf and really changed the game. link I'll be covering the other issues at a later date. Thanks Chris |

Ah, the so-labelled "cunningly-designed box lid" mechanism. So notorious, our gaming group nicknamed a recurrent hanger-on "Box-Lid", since he seemed to think himself quite clever, despite the fact that he was probably the dimmest biped I had ever met. I had all but forgotten about that guy. |

That's the one! Very cunning nickname though! |

You could get exactly the same percentage if you use the GW Artillery Dice. Picture at the bottom. The dice are the Scatter die (Arrow x4 faces, arrowed Reticule x2 faces) and the Artillery die (faces 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, Missfire). For Hit, Arrow + not Missfire = 5/9 ~= 55%. For No Scatter, Arrow + Missfire = 1/9 ~= 11%. Anything else use the arrow direction. (I know it would be more intuitive if the Reticule was Hit / No Scatter, but the proportions are backwards.) Thanks. Yeah, I considered scatter dice, but it seems to me that a d10 roll, rerolling 10 and assigning 1-9 to each of the 9 squares give them equal chance too. Plus I'll probably assign the 10 to the central square as well, just becasue I think it makes more sense. |
