Do you use more than one set of rules to play the same era and scope of battle (e.g. corps sized Napoleonic battles or divisional sized WWII engagements)?

Have you ever gamed the same historical battle with different rulesets?

Yes.

I use Polemos Napoleonics and Horse, Foot and Guns to play big Napoleonic battles. I have used Polemos Napoleonics and various Neil Thomas' rules to play divisional-sized actions.

I use Polemos ECW and Neil Thomas' rules to play out ECW battles, and use Polemos SPQR and Neil Thomas' rules to re-fight Romans vs Gauls/Britons.

And it has been a while since I got them to the table but I have used numerous air combat rules for four-on-four (or so) WW2 games.

Have you ever gamed the same historical battle with different rulesets?

Sure, here is Quatre Bras done with HFG: link

and done with Polemos: link

Too many different sets of rules to mention.

I have a few standard battles I use to test new rules out (Bussaco, Nachod, Agira 1943, Elst 1944 to name but three) and I've done various battles multiple times with different sets.

Again too many to mention all of them but they include Waterloo (four times), the entire Arnhem campaign four times and innumerable Ancient battles.

I am probably in that band of gamers who only have multiple sets in their elusive ambition to find the right one!

Absolutely.Switch between them depending on mood and players.

BTW If you are interested in the same battle with different rule sets you should follow the SoA's Battle Day.

I mostly stick to a single set for a given period.

I play AWI with Age of Reason and the Sword and the Flame.

I have "done" Guilford Courthouse with at least 4 different AWI rules. The variety of troop types and quality gives a good feel for how the rules work.

Yes with TYW, AWI and ACW

Rich Bliss03 Apr 2016 7:44 a.m. PST

Nope. I have have enough trouble keeping rules for different periods straight in my head.

Yesthatphil03 Apr 2016 7:54 a.m. PST

Rules are generally not scale specific …

I play PBI, Crossfire, Megablitz and NQM for WWII

… and (currently) DBA, ADLG, Lost Battles, Basic Impetus and Neil Thomas's AMW (though as the list implies, I'll happily have go at almost anything) ..

Scales: 6mm smallest and 90mm largest.

If "fantasy" and "science fiction" can be considered eras, then I use a lot of rules for essentially the same thing.

Ottoathome03 Apr 2016 8:40 a.m. PST

No

I use only one set of rules for an area. I write my own They give me the game I like.

Kraken Skulls Consortium03 Apr 2016 8:57 a.m. PST

If it is WWII, it seems pretty much all of them. I find myself unable to resist buying pretty much every rule set out there.

I game multiple scales (6mm, 15mm, 20mm, 28mm, and 54mm) in WWII, and find different rules work well for different scales for us, so we are all over the place.

I find myself heading that way now with the Dark Ages too.

Weasel03 Apr 2016 10:06 a.m. PST

More platoon level ww2 skirmish rules than I can think of.

If its a period I am not super into, I'll usually stop at the first okay rules I find.

kallman03 Apr 2016 11:08 a.m. PST

I probably have the most rules for WW II and like them all for various reasons. Other periods I am a bit more focused and might only have one or two rule sets I use.

Mooseworks803 Apr 2016 3:35 p.m. PST

Second World War
Rules: Brigadier General and One Hour Wargames
Scales: 3mm, 6mm, 15mm & 1/72.

I use my own set of rules for every period I play, just modify the weapons and such. Only different thing is I play GQ for naval.

We play ancients (that is Alexander & Successors for us) with Armati, To the Strongest, Clash of Empires and Basic Impetus.
We also used to play DBA, big battle DBA and WAB.

Old Contemptibles07 Apr 2016 7:17 p.m. PST

If you mean currently, then it would be two Napoleonic sets. The Ancients guys here play a different set every month. This is assuming you mean figure scale and not unit scale.
