"It now may be only a matter of time before an increasingly well-armed People's Liberation Army attempts to take the Senkaku Islands by force. China calls them the Diaoyutai and claims these Japanese territories in the East China Sea by historical right.

The strategic question is how will America and Japan ("Ameripan") respond to a Chinese thrust – retreat, bombs and bullets, or embargo? The broader existential question is whether a military response would trigger, Sarajevo-style, a broader World War between the three largest economies on the planet and two reigning Superpowers.

On a personal note, I've seen at least one possible future less than 30 miles down the road from where I live in Southern California. At Camp Pendleton, Japanese Defense Forces regularly train with US marines. One of the top war games is defending the Senkakus from a swarming Chinese invader…"

*sigh*

Article author is full of it.

Iron Fist is an annual JSDF/USMC exercise that has been going on for ELEVEN YEARS.

The USMC uses their experience and expertise to assist & improve the JGSDF's ability to plan, communicate and conduct combined amphibious operations at the platoon, company and battalion levels.

Amphibious landings are OFFENSIVE attacks, definitively NOT training to defend against "swarming Chinese."

If the exercise was about protecting these islands, it would be combines arms and branches of the JSDF services and at a much higher level of organizational training than "platoon, company & battalion."

Personally, I think the Japanese should beat them to the punch, and put a base and some troops on the islands now, since possession is 99.999% of the law in the region, and China has established a precedent.

The Russians are also doing the same, so why not the Japanese as well.

Nothing indicates "ownership" more than occupying the territory, as we've seen in the South China Sea, Crimea, and now the Kuril Islands too.

As for the article, the Japanese do seem to be ramping up their amphibious and other military capabilities, just in case. Makes sense.

I agree the Japanese should put troops on the islands. Makes it much easier to make the claim they belong to Japan if Japanese live there. Build a luxury retirement community on one of them as a further indication they are Japanese.
