What level of game do you want to play?
You could have a brigade on each side.
The majority of rules are designed for a division on each side.
A number are for a corps on each side.
Then there are some that presume an army on each side.

So you could play the attack on La Haye Sainte, or the struggle for Hougomont, or D'Erlon's attack, or the whole battle.

You say you have no fear of granularity. I presume you have time to match and don't need the game over in 3 hours.

I used to enjoy NAPOLEON'S BATTLES with 15mm back in the day. Here recently I've been having a really good time with BLACK POWDER with 28mm figures.

Suggestion: Search forum titles for Napoleonic Rules. That should answer all your questions and then some…

I like detail, no fear of granularity.

Then for big battles: Empire or Revolution & Empire link

Divisional-sized actions: Republic to Empire link

Skirmishes: Chef de Bataillon link

None of these is my cup of tea, but if you like detail…

Hafen von Schlockenberg02 Apr 2016 2:20 p.m. PST

I have to say that being forced to play Chef de Battalion is my personal vision of Hell.
Charts,charts,charts,for all eternity…

vtsaogames02 Apr 2016 2:21 p.m. PST

I'd say Chef de Battalion is a small brigade per side. You like detail? Hefting the rule book will build your muscles.

Large skirmishes: I'd say Sharp Practice.

What about General de Brigade ?

Rudysnelson02 Apr 2016 4:24 p.m. PST

It is nota surprise that we play 'Guard du Corps for 1:50 troop ratio. For 1:20/35 we play War Eagles or fire and Discipline.

VonBlucher02 Apr 2016 7:26 p.m. PST

General de Brigade for Divisional battles, at 1:20 figure ratio. Good forum for the rules also and some of the best scenario books out.

John Thomas802 Apr 2016 8:34 p.m. PST

La Fue Sacre from TooFatLardies is quite awesome. Basically a division-sized game but it's been used to run all of Austerlitz, too.

mumbasa02 Apr 2016 9:34 p.m. PST

Rudy,
What is War Eagles? Where can I find out some information about it?

Yes indeed, General de brigade as per above.

Also, it is for those who enjoy the tactical elements of Napoleonic warfare represented in a coherent set of rules. The 20:1 ratio is ideal to represent the difficulties of manoeuvre, particularly a battalion in line.

The command and control aspect of the rules is the most realistic and yet uncomplicated that I have seen.

G de B has a good and active forum to address questions on the rules and to share war gaming experiences. Highly recommended.

Here is a good resource to start with. Also compare to what gamers in your local area are using. We are a fickle lot. We all own at least 20 Napoleonic rules sets.

Empire!

14Bore03 Apr 2016 2:18 p.m. PST

If big battles and little detail is the goal Empire in a few forms.

A question with 1,000 answers, most of them wrong.

Geoff,

As you probably already know, your original post was hit by the "Bug" and cross-posted with someone else's "Best Napoleonic Rules" thread.

Although your original title is still visible on the Wargaming in the USA page, you might consider reposting it. Chances are you won't be "bit" by the bug twice.

Hafen von Schlockenberg04 Apr 2016 4:31 p.m. PST

That qualifies as a Presumptuous Assumption these days!

Durando05 Apr 2016 9:37 a.m. PST

No I am not reposting

Here's my list of Napoleonic Rules please note its a work in progress

Take care
