There's limited information at the moment, but it seems that Azerbaijan attacked territories in Nagornyi Karabakh, using tanks, artillery and helos. Both sides claim heavy enemy losses of course… link International media is surprisingly quiet at the moment. Armenain news agency site ( eng) news.am/eng Azerbaijan news aegency site (eng) news.az |

Seems like there's a lot of fighting going on in that general region. "Everyone into the pool…..!!!", I guess. Can't be left out of the "fun". |

This has potential to resonate and link up with other conflicts in the region. Could give Russia and Turkey a renewed de facto land border. Barin, ISTR that Russia backs and arms Azerbaijan in this conflict, while the Turks back Armenia (oddly). Is that true? Erdogen was in the US, consulting with various power blocks Thursday. Is he still here? Interesting timing. |

Zippy, The Armenians are strongly aligned with Russia, and have FSB border guards with Turkey and Iran, Russian bases and defence agreements with Russia. The Azerbaijani don't. Armenia is Christian in a sea of Islamic nations so needs a strong friend. I think Russia has tried to keep the peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Cheers, FPR |

to tell the whole truth, even that Russia has long-term military ties with Armenia, we have also sold a lot of weapons to Azerbaijan. There's a cold war between Turkey and Russia for the influence im Azerbaijan, that only escalated after SU-24 story. It is also true, that Russia was brokering ceasefires and peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia before. Don't think we're interested in hot war on the Caucasus now. |

With the current geo-political situation … seems everybody wants to "get a piece of the action". At least for the next 8-10 months. But I really doubt anyone in the West believes they have a dog in this fight. Just say'n … |

FPR, Barin, thanks for the clarifications. I'll update my score card with these notes. |

Not sure if Erdogan is still here or not, now, but he was yesterday, though no private meeting for him with Obama. Still no news of this on the TV today, here……. |

Azerbaijan also has ties to Israel too. This is due to the fact that they border Iran also and there is some disputes with the Iranians. So the Israelis provide training and other items. Would not be surprised if the Israelis had some type of listening posts on the border in exchange. |
