As the title states what are the main differences rules wise between Bolt Action and its supplement Tank War. Of course I know it is about fielding tank platoons but other than that does Tank War have mechanics for larger games; are there other factors?

Thanks

Avoid Tank War. It's worthless.

Not much difference at all now that Warlord has changed the AFV rules. Initially, fully enclosed AFVs never suffered pins. Tank War introduced (and changed the main rules) so that Inexperienced and Regular AFVs have the chance to suffer pins from enemy fire.

Otherwise, the only difference is that infantry teams in a Tank War scenario/list must have a dedicated transport.

I'm glad I bought "Tank War" on sale! On the other hand, I'm not glad I bought it…

Other than the couple small changes noted above, Tank War basically just says, "remember that rule that you can have only one tank? It's gone, field a whole platoon." It seriously could have been a two page PDF instead of a whole book.

Yes I thought it was sorry too.

TW is the only reason why I now have 7x PZIV Ausf H mit schurtzen, 4x Panthers and 3x Tigers for my Germans; 7x T-34/76, 5x T-34/85 and 4x JS-2 for my Russians; and 7x M4A1's, 5x M4A1(76mm) and 4x M26 for my Americans all in 1/48 scale.

So in other words it is just a way to encourage you to buy more vehicle kits. Got it and now I can move on.

You can look at it cynically and say that I guess or you can look at it from the perspective of fielding troops of tanks in you games and playing some real combined arms stuff.

There are some interesting rules for building XP on your crews and gaining a bit of flavour to them from game to game. There are some depictions of "aces" so kind of like special characters in tanks.

There are some command and recovery tanks which are useful in the first instance and might make an interesting scenario in another.

Of all the supplements for Bolt, Tank Wars is the only one that doesn't contain a stack of rules that had already been published so is probably the best value for money.

Now you can move on ;)

I'm building up my forces for Tank War having already completed US, German and Soviet 'infantry based' forces. I'm looking forward to playing some tank based games again having moved to 28mm Bolt Action from Flames of war.

'ScottyOZ' gives a more balanced review there I feel personally, yes it means buying loads more tanks and vehicles but I'm up for that!

Not far to go now and I'll have two 1500 'Tank war' armies. My approach to the entire 'Bolt Action' experience has been to have fun and to enjoy myself, I hope Tank War continues to reward me the same way.

Got a blog if anyone is interested in following my project, it's totally BA focused:)

Lee.

Do you lot have to heap scorn on absolutely everything? It's tiresome.

The chaps at my local gaming shop and I have had great fun playing Tank War, both in 28mm and in 15mm. Having an armoured platoon and a mechanised infantry platoon on both sides makes for a very entertaining, fast moving, game.

Yourbitterpill12 Apr 2016 7:30 a.m. PST

I enjoyed Tank War and I'm happy I purchased it. There are some excellent new scenarios in it.

@SquireBev: It's why this board doesn't have more traffic. I find it funny that the same neckbeards who won't bat an eye paying $30 USD+ for one tank model or $50 USD for a rulebook or $10 USD for a mini will bitch and moan about paying $10 USD for a rules supplement.

I think the main complaint is that they are then "forced" by ……… someone, to buy more miniatures which for someone who has miniatures as a hobby is apparently a bad thing ?

grambo13 Apr 2016 1:47 a.m. PST

Don't take too much arm twisting to get me to buy more 'stuff' that's my hobby :) I like the book, it's another addition to my collection and the quality of the artwork and printing alone makes it well worth the ££ to me.

Meant 'summary' not 'review' above, apologies.

Lee.

SquireBev13 Apr 2016 6:22 a.m. PST

Exactly, that's one of the reasons I bought it. Regardless of actual content, the presentation alone makes them very desirable.

I've got a lot of Flames of War books for the same reason.
