It is now approaching 3rd week since announcement of new ancients range.
Probably a difference from what I would like it be and what it will be. I have gone through everything it could be. May not be far removed existing ranges.

I got the first wave of fleet scale fighters and exo armors for Jovian Chronicles and Lightning Strike from Dream Pod 9. In this first review I'm taking a closer look at the Jovian minis.

There will be another review next week with the CEGA stuff.

You can read the review here: link

Well, that is very odd. How did Colins message get attached in front of(!) my post when I selected Start New Topic?

Allow me to introduce you to one of the TMP Bugs!

Hehe! Well, that's interesting. Hadn't come across this particular strain before. Better call in the marines…

HANS GRUBER28 Mar 2016 8:11 a.m. PST

Perhaps ancient aliens.

Hate myself, but I REALLY like that ship!

The Thunderbolt and Javelin cruisers for JAF were actually the last two ships I hadn't got yet for Lightning Strike, simply because I thought they looked a little boring.

As it turns out the model is much better in the flesh than in the picture on the DP9 site! I should probably get another two Thunderbolts and a pack of Bricrius…

Early Imperial Romans.

The snag with EIR, to my mind, is that although it is a hugely popular army the market is somewhat saturated- I already have three Early Imperial armies from different manufacturers, and am unlikely to collect a fourth.

Possibly, but I don't know anyone who has your vast collection. I have been gaming for more than 40 years and don't currently have any early Imperial Romans (in any scale). I really look forward to this release, especially when they will have seperate boxes for figures in active poses and for those in reserve/marching poses.

I wonder what the mix of the boxes will be? Whether each box will contain a mix of legions and auxilia. That might be ideal, if there are a few figures per sprue in mail and scale. Then all we would need are additional weapons and shields for the auxilia.

No Early Imperial Romans, Hans? Shocked, I am. ;-)

HANS GRUBER04 Apr 2016 9:58 a.m. PST

I was probably warped by WRG 7th edition Late Romans with darts, javelins, and heavy throwing weapons (with rear rank archers).

Johnp400004 Apr 2016 2:15 p.m. PST

I think this is a clever move by Victrix,There has been a lot of negative comments about the small size of the original Warlord EIR Legionaries and it looks like these will be a good compromise.

Colin will be gutted that it's not Biblicals. :-(

colin knight04 Apr 2016 4:54 p.m. PST

Gutted yes. Surprised…not really. Thought more romans was just too obvious and well catered for elsewhere.
Exellent looking render though.

Yes it is a nice render.

Maybe plastic Egyptians or Assyrians in 2017? ;-)

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP05 Apr 2016 5:08 a.m. PST

Exellent looking render though.

Excellent to the point of salivating, if I played the period.

I will thank 'the bug' for the glimpse outside my own gaming.

I wish that they were Caesarian Romans!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mike Adams P.S. Hi Simon!!!!!!

HANS GRUBER05 Apr 2016 7:20 a.m. PST

I might have also preferred Caesarian or Middle Imperial Roman, but I can live with Early Imperial instead. Th Victrix Imperial Roman concept looks really nice.

Maybe plastic Egyptians or Assyrians in 2017?

With all the different projects Victrix has committed to, I think 2017 is very optomistic for anything additional.

DanWW205 Apr 2016 3:39 p.m. PST

These look very good. As others have said, the Warlord Games Early Imperial Romans are (to my mind disappointingly) small, so I could see these Victrix models doing well.

wargame insomniac05 Apr 2016 3:43 p.m. PST

I am dsipointed that Victrix did nt do Persians. Don't really need more EIR on the market. And plastic Persians would have been a good opponent to their existing Greeks and forthcoming Macedonians.

Good news is that it saved my wallet as not tempted and can concentrate on Greeks and Macedonians once I recover more from eye op.

I'd have loved Persians, too- they certainly constitute a gap in the market, and would have tied in well with the Greek ranges.

STEVE LBMS06 Apr 2016 2:55 a.m. PST

Just because Persians are not being made right now don't make the assumption that they won't.

Steve.

I shall wait with bated breath, Steve! :-)

STEVE LBMS06 Apr 2016 4:12 a.m. PST

Hi Simon,

I thought you did not like the Victrix plastics or so I read on Lead adventure I think?

Mithridates06 Apr 2016 5:03 a.m. PST

"Just because Persians are not being made now……" – what a tease you are Steve. If you do end up producing Persians as good as your latest products my wallet will be greatly diminished!

Hope to see the Gauls before XMAS 16.

Hi Steve, for my use at shows and the Wargames Holiday Centre, where the minis get a great deal of rough handling (repeated carriage, unloading, play, loading) I prefer metal as it is hard wearing, although heavy.

That said, I've recently received my first painted plastic Victrix Greeks and they look great; I plan to mix them in 50/50 with metals and see how they wear. They take longer to assemble than metal but the variety in poses is excellent and they lend themselves to conversion.

Re Persians; there aren't any metal or plastic ranges that have tempted me so they would be very welcome. Persian armies are numerous so that lends itself to plastic. I could well see myself collecting some; potential limiting factors would be how complex they are to assemble and the poses. I try to avoid overarm poses (even for metals) as I find them prone to damage and hard to rank.

Best, Simon

PS I have several hundred painted Victrix Naps… I particularly like the Imperial Guard box; simple to assemble and paint, bags of character.

That's funny. My opinion is just the opposite. I don't mind people handling my plastics, but I prefer they keep their hands off my metals. I think metals are much more delicate. I once dropped an army box that pretty much detroyed the figures inside. If these figures were plastic I think they would have survived much better. Because of their light weight I think plastics are more forgiving, and they are easier to repair. Then again, you must be the expert as you seem to lug around 1000's of pounds of metal figures to shows every year.

Steve, BTW great work. I hope all your plans for plastic ranges bear fruit.

colin knight06 Apr 2016 3:27 p.m. PST

I am sure the Victrix guys find Egyptians in plastic appealing. Not sure it would be a risk they would take unless sales of other products went wild.
Looking at latest stuff there is not likely to be anyone better for the task. Plastic chariots would be awesome and a dream re conversions.
The upcoming Spanish cavalry will be fine for Urartian conversions using the Carthaginian Assyrian style helmets. I see it as my very, very small bit to support the amazing talent and investment from Victrix ancients push. Again the Roman sets look like being spectacular. I will try not to let my desire for biblicals or 2nd choice Persians take away from the many sets coming. From a manufactures point I appreciate….as soon as something long planned is announced folks start asking for something else.

Capt Flash18 Apr 2016 6:54 p.m. PST
