'Russian 'Rambo' wipes out ISIS thugs by calling airstrike on HIMSELF when surrounded by Jihadi forces'

Though not the most reliable of sources.

I could quite believe that one, Daily Mirror notwithstanding, was he working alone when it happened?

Choose the better of two deaths I'd say.

Far better than the likely fate facing him should they have captured him.

Barin1 posted about that on another thread, when I inquired as to the type of specialist the guy was, so the story may be correct, since he mentioned him being a forward air controller.

I would not want to be captured by jihadis, so……

Noble71327 Mar 2016 2:50 a.m. PST

….why was he operating alone?

Having some buddies with you doesn't make you immune to being surrounded (just ask Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell)…but it helps.

The post a month or two ago from the Ukrainian fighting highlighted the same issue: pro-Russian separatists were bumped into (and killed) *alone* while moving through buildings.

I guess when fighting on one side of a civil war you better risk being alone than being reported by a mole to other side…it is true in both cases of Syria and Ukraine.

Daily Mirror notwithstanding

Though i'd choose that over the Daily Fail anytime

I can understand the risks of "Russian soldier + local soldier = OPSEC leak". I was suggesting "2 Russian soldiers at all times, never solo". If they have officers spotting/marking targets for nearly a week alone, who pulls perimeter security when he sleeps? Nobody. But with even 2 men you can do 18 hours on / 6 hours off for 24-hour target surveillance, 24-hour security, and sufficient rest to sustain operations. Two men are almost as hard to detect as one.

I'm not sure when the lesson was drilled into the heads of the US military, I assume during Vietnam? If you are in hostile territory and you are ever more than 5-10 meters from your "battle buddy", you are just asking to get captured/killed by an unseen enemy. It seems our esteemed colleagues from the East have yet to internalize the importance of teamwork at the lowest levels.

Like this Youtube vid jokes (NFSW language, youtu.be/9VTI0gev120) "Yeah, I know it ain't Vietnam. There's no Charlie…..but CHARLIE IS FRICKIN' EVERYWHERE."
