Hi, latest finished units. Figures from Zvezda 1/72 Russian Hussars set.

Nice work!

wonder figures and brushwork.

ArkieGamer23 Mar 2016 7:37 p.m. PST

Those figures are ok, and everything,* but that is THE CLEANEST CUTTING MAT I'VE EVER SEEN. Please tell me your secret.

*Kidding, of course. The painting is fantastic-I love the vivid colors and high contrast shading/highlighting.

It's too late for me but everyone seems to do some outstanding work on 1/72's

You beat me to it. How come 1/72 plastic, which once meant Airfix Cuirassiers (with tiny horses and riders, no carbines or scabbards, terrible saddlery, ridiculous poses, bases that did not marry up to horses etc) now has evolved to this level?

Makes we, who follow the One True Scale, to weep.

Lovely bright unit – very inspirational.

It just goes to show what a great and vibrant hobby we have – always great stuff to drool over in 6, 15/18, 1/72, 28 or 54 etc

Thanks for sharing. Love seeing your work

Texas Jack25 Mar 2016 2:19 a.m. PST

They are indeed outstanding work! I am too lazy to look up the colors, what regiment are they?

As a War and Peace fan, I did mine as the Pavlograd Hussars, but they are nowhere nearly as beautiful as your work. Well done!

And really, this is a great example of modern 1/72, the old Airfix are only a remembrance of the bad old days.

Widowson25 Mar 2016 1:03 p.m. PST

Jack – I just re-read the novel, but I don't get the W&P reference. Please elaborate, since I have some more of these to paint.

I did this same set, but with conversion extras I'll have to share some day.

Marc – I couldn't find the old thread where you talked about finding some Zvezda French Light Infantry. Where did you get them? I too need some YG.

Thanks

Widowson25 Mar 2016 1:07 p.m. PST

Oh, I forgot to mention that the old Airfix British hussars are not a bad conversion set if you need a few extras. They have the right shabraque, and with a head swap, you're in business.

Markconz25 Mar 2016 1:31 p.m. PST

Beautiful work!

Bill. I have some boxes of zvezda voltigeurs if your interested

The Airfix hussars were amongst their best figures. Heavy set, chunky guys, massively heavier than their cuirassiers. Great work on the dolmann and pelisse braiding. We can forgive the guy with the guidon/pennant, but maybe not the kettle drummer, nor the idiot crouching behind his dead horse.

Brilliant for their day. Bit off work amputating heads off Ligne French and they got shakos. I still have a photo of my Uxbridge.

EEEEEEEEE. Nostalgia. It is not what it used to be………

Widowson25 Mar 2016 3:18 p.m. PST

Marc,

I'm more interested in where you got them, unless you are sure you got the last. We've done this cross-the-pond mailing before, but it should be a last resort. Besides, you're going to want to keep what you've got. VERY rare and valuable figures for legere and YG.

Widowson25 Mar 2016 3:21 p.m. PST

deadhead,

Completely agree. the crouching idiot would have been so much better off as a straight casualty in the Airfix tradition, and the kettledrummer?

I use his drums for HaT Early Russian Infantry. They have no drummers and no officers. WE WERE PROMISED A COMMAND SET! WHERE IS OUR COMMAND SET?

Otherwise, that kettledrummer is the most useless figure they ever made, except maybe the WWI French Bicyclist.

Texas Jack26 Mar 2016 1:45 a.m. PST

Widowson- The Pavlograd Hussars were the regiment Nicolas Rostov belonged to.

Speaking of Airfix, last month I painted up a box of their old Waterloo French infantry (it was a "gift" grin ), and just trying to figure out what I was painting was a huge chore.

But now I am working on HaT 1808-1812 Frenchies and they are heaven.

Widowson28 Mar 2016 1:40 p.m. PST

Well, the HaT French infantry are better than Arifix, but still a disappointment. The advancing with bayonette guy looks like he's been crushed flat by a tank, and the marching guys look like "Mr. Natural," trucking down a comic book street.

However, you can cut off the advancing guy at the waist and put him on "marching" legs, and he's not bad. Unfortunately, that leaves you with no marching legs at all.
