From Perry…

"We have teamed up again with the indomitable Col Mike Snook to bring you new resources for an overlooked period in wargaming. Mike has written two books, the first volume of which goes to the printers today and covers Cape Frontier warfare between 1834-53. In this volume he examines in depth the fighting men and type of warfare conducted during the 6th, 7th and 8th Cape Frontier Wars, the Boer-Ndebele War of 1836-7, the Boer –Zulu War of 1838-40, the Anglo-Boer confrontations in the 1840's and the one day Anglo-Basotho war of 1852…"

Oh,man, the Perrys come through again with under- covered periods! I've been wanting Xhosa ever since reading Frontiers. There goes the money…

I hope Mike Snook will get to some of the later obscure conflicts. I have been able to find almost nothing on the Gun War of 1880-81; maybe it's not much discussed since the Basutos won?

Interesting development. I'd like to see the Perry take on an Xhosa range of figures.

Oh,yeah, forgot to say thanks,Tango! Don't know when I would have seen these otherwise – I've never looked at their site before, for,er,monetary reasons. May have to make an exception on this line!

@ Hafen von S : Have you had a look at the SA Military History Journal – link

The Cape Frontier Wars have held a lifelong fascination for me, probably as I grew up in the Eastern Cape and have visited some of the forts/martello tower(s) involved.

I must do my best to resist this as I have too many unfinished projects.

Hafen von Schlockenberg26 Mar 2016 8:28 a.m. PST

Jacques: I just saw your response; thanks very much.173 casualties for the Gun War is interesting. I'll try the search function again later--I got a "Not Available" notice.
I hope there are some descriptions of actions on there somewhere, also uniform details, although information on those small volunteer groups is hard to come by.
Trying to find suitable figures is another thing. I'm thinking maybe Zulu War Native Horse, with some conversion, for the Basutos?

Unfinished projects? All of my projects are unfinished projects. Do I let that stop me? Fie,I say!

This is pretty interesting. I've always had a soft spot for Xhosa after having to (try to) learn the language and history in school. Hope they get a good range of models.
