Can anyone recommend any books that feature the appearance of the Croat and Serb irregular forces during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-49?

You mean besides those written in Serbian? grin

The best information I have found in one place, though not complete is:

The man who saved Austria, the life and times of Baron Jellacic

by Hartley, M Published [1912]

link

Jellacic was the Ban of Croatia at the time of the revolution and organized the Croats to invade Hungary in Spring of 1848 to defend Austria [Once Hungary refused to consider Croatian sovereignty when they declared their independence, Croatia having been considered part of Hungary.] The book gives a description of the Croat Frontier troops, organization and early battles as well as *some* of the guerilla actions. [and Serbs to some extent as they joined The Ban.] with illustrations.

While there are a couple of great books on the war including pictures and irregular battles, the books are in Hungarian.

hope that helps….

Thanks for the link. What are the illustrated books in Hungarian? I just ordered Somogyi's book on the Honved army.

Let me remind you all that the Foreign Correspondent has a lot of articles on the Hungarian Revolt of 1848-1849. You can find a file with a war index for the first 100 issues on the 19th Century Warfare and Wargaming Facebook group.

Robert, Hermann. 1848-1849 A szabadságharc hadtörténete. (2001) Budapest: Korona Kiadó

Worth the pictures and battle maps alone.

McLaddie, what is the best way to find a copy of Hermann Robert's book?

Well, you can order it from the link I gave. It is difficult to find in US stores.

I'm thinking about putting in a book search for Hermann's book from the Hungarian site. Can you give me some info about it?
