Since nobody makes them, despite promises…cough QRF cough, What would be the best substitute figure for Canadians? Either 64 pattern webbing with C1s or 82 pattern with C7s. Preferably a range that includes something that looks like a Carl G and the other heavy weapons.

Mako1120 Mar 2016 3:12 p.m. PST

QRF's early West Germans?

The G3 rifle barrel will be a bit short, but pics I've seen from another range that just came out have FNs that look like G3s as well (probably shortened due to concerns about casting, and breakage). They're wearing American M1-style helmets, which is what the Canadians wore, IIRC.

They supposedly have released a guy with a CG as well, but I've yet to see it.

Crazyfrenchteacher20 Mar 2016 3:47 p.m. PST

If I remember correctly Cold War Dutch and Canadian troops were similar.

Martin From Canada20 Mar 2016 4:03 p.m. PST

Yeah, I'm also waiting :-/

Armiesarmy21 Mar 2016 2:14 a.m. PST

Could this be my range Mako ? :)

If it is, then yes to the slightly shortened barrels. Given its 15mm and the fact any longer will simply bend (I've had some sent to me from two other manufactures 50% bent, 25% broke) I've gone with some simplifications. However I can absolutely guarantee that you can tell the differences between both the SLR and G3. I know I've cast both of them :)

The SLR has the 'fat end' removed as this was for casting purposes :)

Since nobody makes them, despite promises…cough QRF cough….

I've done them. Chas sent a few back to me for modification, and I got distracted making all the Stryker variants, the new cast Leopard 1 turret and the LAV III, but I'll get back on them and send them over to him.

Major General Stanley21 Mar 2016 3:04 a.m. PST

The Germans look like a hybrid with C1/slr and 82 patern. Early Israeli are sort of close. I don't know about the Dutch, but I can't find them anyway. I suppose I'll start on the tracks and hope that by the time that they're done the infantry will be ready

Mako1121 Mar 2016 3:40 a.m. PST

For FNs, seems to me that perhaps making them with just the main body stock, might be best, and then let people add on a piano wire, or nylon bristle barrel of the appropriate length. A dimple, or hole for drilling them out, and inserting/gluing the above would work.

Then again, perhaps many don't want to do that, so I guess they could always cut those off, assuming they've survived casting and transport, and then perform the above surgery, instead.

Cosmic Reset21 Mar 2016 3:59 a.m. PST

Cool, Canadians are really happening. Now if only they had some East Germans to knock around.

Mako

do it yourself barrels is a hard sell! :)

I did an April Fools a few years back where I said we were doing 15mm facial expressions. All you had to do was file off the face from your figure and glue one of these on…

bruntonboy21 Mar 2016 10:35 a.m. PST

DDR, use Peter Pig AK47 range regulars with replacement '45 German helmets. Easy.

Oiler7221 Mar 2016 12:19 p.m. PST

I've been toying around with the idea of using BF Vietnam US troops for 1990's Canucks or BF Aussies cause they have both FN's and m16's…close enough for C7's at that scale…the webbing looks fine and I really like the bushcap…just like we had prior to CADPAT…

Cheers.

Fred Cartwright21 Mar 2016 12:27 p.m. PST

Geoff I'll have a pack of the facial expressions plus a couple of pots of camouflage and tartan paint! :-)

Armiesarmy21 Mar 2016 1:34 p.m. PST

Scale creep Geoff…..never work…..:)

GeoffQRF21 Mar 2016 3:48 p.m. PST

…I had a couple of enquiries

Rudysnelson21 Mar 2016 4:29 p.m. PST

When I was detached to the MI battalion, I examined some equipment brought over by Czech deserters. The helmet in particular was different in two of the three guys kits.

Off topic but I will never forget that session. Some of the MI female officers were very curious about the Eastern bloc attitude toward women in the ranks. So one asked the guys the question of how they would treat female prisoners. The response was their would be no prisoners in a break through operation. All female would be shot if encountered with a uniform on and they would be even be save with a red cross patch on.
The women officers were stunned since many of their CEWI (early 80s) units were commanded by female Lts and had female operators. These operated with the Cavalry in the frontlines or even in front of them. So capture had been expected. Needless to say, within weeks a new E & E training program was introduced.

RKelly22 Mar 2016 9:23 a.m. PST

I used the BF Vietnam infantry for my cold war Canadians. They worked out fine. Just make sure you have the Canadian flags on the shoulders. You can either paint on the Vietnam helmet covers or the Woodland pattern.

There are some photos on our group's site. dicedevils.com and use "Cold War" for your search.

Oiler7222 Mar 2016 2:44 p.m. PST

Great post Rob…I saw it some time ago and have gone back many times to the pic as inspiration…may I ask what you used for the TOW's?

Cheers.

I got the TOWs from QRF. There is another set that has a gunner attached. Might be in the US section.

RKelly22 Mar 2016 6:48 p.m. PST

Oh, and I agree that using Germans with G3s might work for steel helmets, 64 webbing and FNs.

Hey all,

Well, I've been wanting to keep this under wraps for as long as possible but coincidentally as this subject has come up just a bit before the time frame I would like to be the first to announce that Canuck Miniatures is starting a Kickstarter to raise funding to develop a range of 15mm Cold War appropriate, early to mid 1980's, Canadian infantry and armour in the next month.

Who are you and why this subject? Well please let us introduce ourselves we are Canuck Miniatures based out of… you may have guessed it Canada. Being a Canadian and ex military , my passion has been to produce an accurate Canadian line of miniatures to use for war gaming. For far too long we gamers have had to cobble together from different lines a makeshift Canadian army if we wanted to game anything Canadian Cold War. We've had to make due with inaccurate and in most cases poor or out of date miniatures. We at Canuck Miniatures have finally said enough. Our mission is to represented Canada properly, accurately and with 21st technology quality. This Kickstarter will be centered around the 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group circa 1985. Infantry will be equipped with '82 Pattern web gear FNC1 and 2's, GPMG, Carl Gustav, 60 and 81 mm mortars. For the armoured forces our goal is to produce the Leopard C1, M113A1's, M150 TOW, Lynx Recon tracks, M109's and if possible M557's , Cougars Grizzlies, Iltis jeeps and even an CH-136 Kiowa. This line will endeavor to also cater to those who wish to model a Canadian Air and Sea Transportable Groups as well as units from 4CMBG.

So why a Kickstarter? Well, let's be honest, like any other new venture we lack all the funds to develop, manufacture and distribute the miniatures. Luckily Canuck Miniatures has partnered with another reputable Manufacturer to help with manufacturing and distributing. This manufacturer wishes to remain unnamed until the Kickstarter begins but be assured Canuck Miniatures has partnered with a veteran of this business. Again we wish to start this as a Kickstarter to raise the needed funds and look forward to your support, feedback and ideas from those who decide to help with this endeavor. As mentioned we are looking at launching very soon, just waiting on scheduling and some artwork to kickoff this project. Stay tuned for more information.

RKelly23 Mar 2016 10:43 a.m. PST

I'll be watching for that Kickstarter. I would stay away from anything that is already done by Battle Front such as the M113s, M109s and M577s and just concentrate on distinctly Canadian items like the infantry, AVGP etc. 5/4's would be nice, though they wouldn't really be of much use in a game but they would look cool. I actually have a couple of Iltis' in 1/100 scale made by Roskopf.

CanuckMiniatures23 Mar 2016 11:52 a.m. PST

When launched we will be asking what the backers want in particular and feedback will be one of our deciding factors on what gets built.

Oiler7223 Mar 2016 10:04 p.m. PST

Looking forward to seeing the kickstarted. Good luck Canuck.

About May, along with the LAV III. We already have the Leopard C1 (1A3). We should have the C2 by then as well.
