Best portrayal of Napoleon on the large or small screen?

RavenscraftCybernetics19 Mar 2016 7:51 a.m. PST

Ian Holm – Time Bandits

Rod's certainly got the height for the role.

Hlaven19 Mar 2016 9:06 a.m. PST

Rod Steiger for sure for me. WATERLOO

darthfozzywig19 Mar 2016 9:57 a.m. PST

Rod Steiger, but honorable mention to Terry Camilleri in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."

Guy that played napoleon in bill and ted.

Got the petty side of him just right.

14Bore19 Mar 2016 10:13 a.m. PST

Rod Steiner was pretty good, a list needs to be made of choices.

Rod Steiger in Waterloo

I always thought Marlon Brandon's portrayal in "Desiree" was quite good, but the movie overall was uninspiring.

Rod Steiger.

Ian Holm I think, in "The Emperor's new clothes". He is, of course, the only actor to play the Emperor 3 times!

Did think Steiger did a terrific job tho.

JSchutt19 Mar 2016 2:05 p.m. PST

Mr. Peabody….

John Miller19 Mar 2016 2:46 p.m. PST

Had to look it up but Armand Assante played Napoleon in a mini series.

gamedad2519 Mar 2016 5:27 p.m. PST

+1 for Ian Holm in "The Emporer's New Clothes".

Captain Gideon19 Mar 2016 6:18 p.m. PST

Another vote for Rod Steiger as the best Napoleon IMHO.

Although Charles Boyer,Marlon Brando,Herbert Lom and Ian Holm were all very good but for me Steiger was Napoleon hands down.

There's 2 scenes in Waterloo that come to mind the first scene Napoleon is dictating some letters and when he gets to the Tsar of Russia he looks into the camera and starts talking and it's great.

The other scene is near the end of the film where Napoleon says "I've been in this position before at the Battle of Marengo,I lost the Battle at 5 O'clock but I won it back again at 7.

21eRegt19 Mar 2016 6:43 p.m. PST

Another "vote" for Rod Steiger.

Christian Clavier. A French mini-series that has the best (imho) Eylau charge on the net.

And of course one of the best lines ever …va-tu nous laisser dévorer par ces gens là? that's actually a pretty cool line. (are you going to let us be devoured by those people?). Murat's look at Napoleon is priceless!

Camcleod19 Mar 2016 7:58 p.m. PST

Brando in Désirée.

Old Contemptibles19 Mar 2016 11:39 p.m. PST

Rod Steiger

Old Contemptibles19 Mar 2016 11:40 p.m. PST

Herbert Lom would be great if Napoleon was a Vampire.

Rod Steiger for me also.

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP20 Mar 2016 3:36 p.m. PST

Steiger as Boney in 1815….portraying a former genius, way past his best, knowing his gamble has not paid off, long before he attempts a campaign.

Steiger is criticised for his method acting…the style of the 70s………..he comes across as flawed, weak, human, sweaty, ill…….that will not suit everyone, esp those who idolise Boney.

DoW , Plummer is unforgettable in the role. Stole the show….but the film is far from offering the slightest criticism of him.

Ney is my favourite. Dan O'Herlihy at his best……..

If only we could take out the few awful scenes still in it and find what Sergei B clearly did delete.

History Buffs: Waterloo

-- a pretty good review of the historical accuracy of the film "Waterloo," with some memorable shots of Rod Steiger as The Emperor.

We will probably never EVER now what treasure wound up on the editors floor--- both for War and Peace and Waterloo. Rumors persist

arthur181521 Mar 2016 2:24 a.m. PST

Rod Steiger for his portrayal of Boney 'past his sell by date' at Waterloo.
Ian Holm for an amusing, sympathetic yet also critical portrayal in The Emperor's New Clothes.

History Buffs is well worth watching……..never heard of it before so thanks!

The presenter's enthusiasm is infectious and he does present some great scenes from W&P and Waterloo. I think he could have been a little more critical of historical inaccuracies. There were far worse gaffs than the three he highlights; the British singing a song not yet written (never knew that!), Cambronne's mot and The DoRs Ball setting

SJDonovan21 Mar 2016 3:58 a.m. PST

And the Academy Award goes to Terry Camilleri for Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure:

Hafen von Schlockenberg21 Mar 2016 8:08 a.m. PST
